IMHO the stuff sold at argos is a pile of poo, however there are a few
other cheap options that are reasonable. Go into your LBS and ask what
they recommend. I would also recommend multiple lit at both the front
and rear.

Personally if going for battery powered lights I would get front and
rear lights that take the same type of cells. Then I would get a
stock of rechargeable batteries and a smart charger. With this
strategy a couple of spare batteries can be carried and used for
either light.

Not been mentioned yet, but probably blindingly obvious, LEDs, for dogs
sake don't buy a filament battery system.

Also a good idea to make sure front and rear use the same type of
battery, and inexpensive batteries at that. AA is de rigeur, but not
always the case <remembers a rear light that was powered by a battery
only made in SE Mongolia>

I've used the Cateye products in the past and found them ok.

Yes, The Argos stuff is quite sufficient for what you want. Not the 7
quid set, but the next one up. I've been using one for a couple of
years and it's good enough to see where you're going on unlit roads...
and the brackets haven't broken - which seems to be the weak point of
most cheap lights. As other have said, get LED ones that use the same
batteries front and rear.

The attachment is identical to the one i bought and reported on on
Friday. (proteam £6.99 from HyperXtra!) Mine doesn't do single LED, just
full or flashing, and my lamp is black, thinner and longer, and the
switch/slider is on the side.

A friend bought some surprisingly bright smart lights from James'. I
currently use 2 or 3 cheap rear lights and a £15 "Hermann" front light along
with a Luxeon headlamp. IMO the best thing you can do is go and spend a few
quid on bright lights at the LBS. Get some that will run happily off
rechargeables, and preferably AAs rather than AAAs. AAs cost about the same
but hold a lot more power.
