Had a tour round the heights of Swindale yesterday. Didn't see a soul. The whole area is a trackless expanse, not the place to be caught out in bad weather, though surprisingly there were signs of regular sheep farming activity. Presumably the whole of Lakeland was like this before the crowds came, though it is easy to see why they have stayed away from this bit!
Crossed the valley bottom within sight of Mosedale Cottage, now maintained by MBA. This and the hut on Fleetwith Pike are the only bothies I know of in Lakeland. Anyone know of any others?

I did much the same a couple of years ago but didn't know Mosedale Cottage was still a bothy. It looked too posh and I got the impression that an agricultural worker was living there as an occupant departed on a quad bike just after I passed.

There's the hut on Great Lingy Hill - not maintained by the MBA though.

The hut on Great Lingy Hill is/was a shooting hut. It's open all year round but is only made of wood, and is really just a great big shed.
I was talking about the Dubs Quarry hut which obviously is an old quarry building. Didn't know there was a hut in Warnscale. Where abouts is it?

There's actually 3 huts within about 1 mile in the dubs area, the Dubs Hut at the quarry, the Warnscale Hut (NY204 132) just south of the beck and a third at the top of Honnister Quarry (I think aprox NY212 140) although this is little run down now. I've also heard of one on the Old Man Of Coniston although I've never taken the time to find it as yet
The hut on Coniston is at approx 271968. It can just be seen from the standard way up to Goat,s Water from the Walna Scar track. Some photos are here:-
This belongs to White Spider Climbing Club. Don't know much about them, but Jack Diamond was one of Harry Griffin's contemporaries, so I suspect the club comes from Barrow way.
