Looking for a Silver Colored Chain

plated. I believe that's what you want.

that look like"Z 4E." The LBS was unable to find this chain in any of

the drive chain, but a couple of 8spd ones would work for the timing
chain if they matched the color of the drive chain.

They showed me a couple of chains including a Dura-Ace 9spd, but the
color was rather drab, almost gray, compared to the one on the Trek.
The mechanic told me that even after the protecting coating is
removed, it still would not be as shiny as the one on the Trek.

Does anyone know of a chain that matches my subjective description?

A DA 9s chain is 'silver' as are many higher end Sram chains..

Looking at that chain (CN-7701) at Shimano's web site shows the same
dull gray that I observed at the LBS. Shimano's specs state the plates
have been "Zinc-Alloy Plated." I know little about plating processes,
and assume that a zinc-alloy could be a shiny silver color, but it was
very dull compared with the chain on the Trek bike.

Clean the goop off and it is silver....
