Are there any good, moderated bulletin boards devoted to running that
are free of all the trash talk and infantile infighting here on
rec.running? I wanted to get other runners' opinions on what shoes
they like best these days for shock absorbption, but don't
particularly need to be called a moron or a racist in the process.

excluded :-).When trolls go wild, you just have to be patient and filter them out. Don't
throw out the baby with the bathwater.Yes, there are other fora out there, such as letsrun.com.
Re cusioning, I run only in racing flats. In this realm I find the Nike
mayfly/vaporfly to be very cushy. The Zoom Air Katana also has a nice
smooth ride and is lighter still.I have found that the *right* racing shoe is easier on the feet and legs
then the wrong trainer with supposedly more advanced "control" and "support"
features (i.e., more ounces of heavy stuff). -

that almost impossible to answer. One persons shock absorption is
another's 2X4. You will get lots of anecdotes but not likely of value
for you.FWIW I like the Asics 2120,, it has some stability and some cushioning
but don't go buy a pair based on my opinion.-Doug

if you're neutral, overpronator, or supinator, you might try asking in
RW shoe forum. Like Doug said, what's "shock absorption" for one might
be 2x4 for another or uncontrollable instability for others (like me).
But there's people there with a range of experience across many kinds of
shoes.I might add that one of the hassles of web-based boards is that most of
them don't allow as much user control as usenet with a decent newsreader
as to what you see and tend to be really slow.Dot

Q: What do Doug, TBR, and I have in common?
A: Our favorite brands of sneaks come from the big three WWII Axis
powers.I don't know what that means, but there you have it.
Though at least I do also like Nikes...

But there's people there with a range of experience across many kinds of

possible. And I have my likes and dislikes (past faves were the
Adidas Supernova and Asics Gel Preleus), but I haven't bought shoes in
a couple years, and just wanted to know what people were using these
days. -

and brands. Rotate them. Got three pairs of Mizuno wave creation
5's, two pairs of Brooks Radius 6's, a pair of Wave Precisions I use
for track intervals, and a pair of Brooks t-4's for racing. I like
them all just fine. Next pair will probably be a new brand to
continue the diversity. With this mix, the oldest probably having 6-700 miles on them, I
haven't had a stress injury for three years or so. I'm told (by
several posters here) that the diversity of age and brand is good for
avoiding injury.Frank

I have found that the *right* racing shoe is easier on the feet and

and "support" features (i.e., more ounces of heavy stuff).Of course you know where I stand.
But I just received the summer 07 copy of "New York Runner" from the
NY Road Runners. They dispense this sage advice to their four hundred
billion members:-- snip --
Motion-control shoes are best for:
- severe overpronators (runners with low-arched or inward-rolling
feet)
- runners who weigh 180 pounds or more
- high-mileage runners (more than 30 miles per week)
- frequently injured runners (those who have lost four weeks or more
of training due to injury in the past year)Stability shoes are best for:
- mild to moderate overpronators (runners whose shoes do not break
down on the inner side)
- runners who weight less than 180 pounds
- moderate mileage runners (15-30 miles per week)
- runners who run with orthotics or arch supports
- rarely injured runners (those who have lost less than four weeks of
training due to injury in the past year)Cushioned shoes are best for:
- underpronators (runners with high-arched or outward-rolling feet)
- runners who weigh less than 140 pounds or who run very efficiently
- beginners and low-mileage runners (less than 15 miles per week)
- rarely injured runnersIn rare cases, a biologically efficient and experienced runner can use
lightweight trainers for daily training.-- snip --
So let's see.
I have pretty low arches, run >30 MPW, maybe borderline between
"rarely" and "frequently" injured? Call it 2.5 factors in favor of
motion control. My shoes do not in fact break down on the inner side, weigh <180
pounds, 1/2 credit for rare injuries. 2.5 factors for stability.I run pretty efficiently so that's 1 vote for cushion.
Ugh, no thanks to any of the above. Or even the 10 oz. LWTs which are
allegedly suitable for only the elitest one or two percent of the
population.
