  1. I tried a couple of new "low carb" foods yesterday. None had sugar alcohols.
However, what I found was that all the carbs were extremely high
glycemic--i.e. they shot right into my blood sugar and caused a noticeable
spike at half an hour much more pronounced than what I experience eating
regular foods with the same carb count.

I ended up feeling groggy from the high blood sugar spike and then hungry an
hour later when a low blood sugar rebound occurred.

    The foods were:

Progresso low carb chicken vegetable soup. Foul tasting. The chicken is all
stuck together with some kind of gelatin and the broth has no resemblance to
real chicken broth. Oh, and did I mention the MSG aftertaste?

Carb Countdown Orange Pineapple Banana juice. Delicious, but whatever is in
it goes right into the blood stream, so I'd advise sticking with the 8 oz
portion size, which I found difficult to do as it was so good and it has
been so long since I've had any juice.

The Baker brand whole wheat Flax seed bread. Better than most low carb
breads, but still a bit gummy. Very expensive. At this point in maintenance,
I'm inclining to eat a slice of dense, sourdough real stuff made with
nothing but whole wheat grain (as opposed to supermarket "whole wheat" that
    is usually mostly white flour.)

you need to get Whole Grain - not Wole Wheat . Isn't Wheat bread just White
bread that hasn't been bleached? If the real bread doesn't affect your blood
sugar levels and doesn't make you crave or gain weight - why not introduce
some? I had done South Beach and lost while having a slice of good bread a
    day.

You are a brave soul - trying out these weird LC foods! LOL!

I've been experimenting with sugar alcohols and my diabetes (Type 2
    since 1999).

I cannot eat anything with more than a gram or two of sugar alcohol
without problems. Also, seem to stall severely when I eat sugar
alcohols. Interestingly I can eat the Dreamfields pasta with no problems
but don't eat it enough or in such quantities that I can comment as to
    weight loss.

No, I tried the higher sugar alcohol food as a dessert...Blue bunny low
    card ice cream.

I've also had the same experience with any of the low carb/sugar alcohol
products over the past month as I've experimented.

As for the pasta I only have that about once every couple of weeks.

  6. Dropped28,

I haven't had canned soup since I started low carbing many years ago. I
guess I just plain forgot how disgusting it is. I think the "low carb"
vegetable soup is just the regular soup with all the noodles and potatoes
removed. I ended up throwing away the other half of the can. Too nasty.

The low carb juice is supposedly 10% fruit juice with splenda, flavorings, a
bit of oil and a food gum to give it texture and some vitamin C thrown in.
It probably has more frankenstuff in it than we'd like in an ideal world,
but I am coming down with a cold and it was so nice to be able to drink
something juicy. I haven't had a glass of fruit juice in over 6 years.

The calories are very low, too--25, which suggests that the carb count is
    probably accurate.

As far as eating whole grain goes, I've eaten small amounts of serious whole
grain bread now and then since going into maintenance. I have to take
Precose with it, a drug that slows carb digestion, but if I do that, it
works fine. One slice of the Vermont sourdough whole wheat works okay too.
But these are "occasional" foods. I tried the low carb bread because it
looked like real bread. It isn't too bad toasted, but the rubbery gluten
texture screams "low carb bread" so I think I'd prefer to eat GG
Scandinavian Crisp breads instead. They are most definitely low carb and
    taste very good to me.

I usually don't buy "low carb" products because most of them are full of
sugar alcohols which give me the screaming munchies and because at the
relatively high carb level I'm at now, on maintenance, I can eat small
amounts of non-low carb carby stuff and be fine.

  7. Gary,

Maltitol hits my system almost as hard as regular sugar and my body seems to
think lacitol should be renamed "Ex-laxitol".

I do okay on Dreamfields too, except that both I and the Other Half find it
can give us wicked gas as it makes it's undigested way through the system.

When I make it, I weight the portions on my little postage scale, because it
is too easy to eat a very large portion of it without meaning to.
Unfortunately "one portion" of pasta is a pitifully little and hardly worth
    the calories.

  9. Linda,

I haven't tried the Minute Maid and probably won't. It is pretty hard to
limit intake on the juice--it seems to be one of the few things that I've
built up a deprivation feeling about because ,unlike other carby foods which
I've let myself sample now and then in maintenance, real juice is so high in
carbs and so fast acting that it isn't something I can handle.

But after a couple days I've decided that the Carb Countdown is a worthy
addition to my diet. Especially when it is on sale for $2.00 a container.

Now I need to see if it works in cooking. I'm thinking it might be REAL
nice mixed in with splenda syrup and toasted pecans. And it might make for a
nice addition to some other foods that could use a fruity flavor.

BTW your before and after photos are wonderful!

  10. Thanks for the compliment about my pics!

I remembered when I read your original post about orange juice. IIRC, isn't
that one of the emergency remedies that is given to diabetics who are
    bottoming out?

And, yes. The Minute Maid was really delish, so I know that it would be
difficult for me to only have 6 oz. at a time.

  11. Linda,

Yes, orange juice is what the medical folks "prescribe" to correct dangerous
hypos because it causes an immediate surge in blood sugar. I stopped
drinking it even before I started low carbing because orange juice has more
sugar in it than a regular Pepsi and I figured there was no way it could be
    good for anyone.

Have either of you tried adding a LC "juice" to some sparkling water? I
haven't gotten it in a long time, but that's what I started doing with sf
Tang. I usually find any kind of juice or artificially-sweetened soda to be
a little to sweet, so I enjoy it more when I cut it with the seltzer. I'm
thinking that might work really well with the new LC juices. That way you
can enjoy a tall glass. Plain water doesn't work for me, but sparkling water

is Splenda-sweetened. Crystal Springs. They have it at my local Kroger
store and it's usually only 50 cents a bottle.

I find Splenda to have a nasty aftertaste for me, but if I dilute a

I've been home with a cold this week, drinking that new low-carb Red
