  1. I'm back and ready to begin 'actively' hosting the Challenge.

I will Google to find out how everyone ended up for September AND if you
would like (and Ray doesn't mind), I can copy the October Challenge finals
and create a link to them in order for you to have a quick reference to your
    progress.

Also, I like Ray's chart better! Isn't it great to see your loss
    highlighted??? I'll incorporate that.

RAY: If you would prefer to host the Challenge again, just let me know. I
    am joining in this time!!!

FYI Losers: I offer successes a page that shows your before and after pics
and a brief paragraph of your weightloss journey. If you would like to take
advantage of this offer, please let me know.

    Hmm...what else??

I'm so over being heavy. I'm 50lbs heavier than I was in January 2001. So,
I've hit "rock bottom" and decided NO MORE!!!

I'm dedicated to becoming a "loser" in the positive sense of the word!

So, you will more of me on the ASDLC and less of me in the pics I will post!

  2. So - are we gearing up for the November challenge now? That should be a good
one with Thanksgiving and in my family there are a few birthdays too!!

    I'm game for November!
I'll sign up for 6lbs (whoa!!!)

    Nov goal= 140 Wow!!

  3. Glad you're back, CA!

    Glad you're back, CA!

Thanks, Roger. I'm glad to be back. I really need to focus on relearning
how to eat properly. As you know, I went ga-ga when I was pregnant. Man,
the sugar cravings are still killing me.

So, I'm at 175 (still) and going to shoot for these short term goals:

    Get below 170.
    Get below 160.
    Get below 150.
    Get below 140.
    Get below 130.
    Maintain at below 130.

I'm not sure how long it will take, but I AM shooting for sometime in 2005.

We shall see. I'm trying not to go gung-ho so that I don't get burned out
quickly. I have a tendency towards extreme behavior (probably where my
    bingeing comes in to play).

What happened to our October Meet and Greet???

I AM going to be in Atlanta sometime between November 15 and 20th. I would
love to meet other low carbers.

My friend Liza will also be in town. You remember her, Roger, don't ya??

Well, you've made a start. I can gurantee that you won't get there if you
don't start trying, so you've taken that important first step.

Well, I don't know. You can try to stir up the pot, since you are back. I
figured the challenges of being a new mom had its grips on you, so I didn't
want to push. I really can't spearhead an Atlanta meet up since I don't
live there and really don't know much about it, but certainly I can attend.

I don't really have any conflict with those dates, other than I'm planning
to ride a century in the Festavelo de Charleston on December 4, and I need
to be getting ready for it.

Oh, yeah. How could I forget Liza! 🙂

  6. I posted this early this morning before I left for work. Don't see it, so
    I'll repost it here.

Made October's goal of 5 pounds, ended at 190.

Sign me up for November, but only put me down for 3 pounds. You know, the
holidays and all. Plus, I'm slowing down on purpose. ONLY 30 pounds left
    to goal!!

    WAHOOOO!!!!

BTW, welcome back, Carol Ann! And a big thanks to you Ray for keeping
    October alive!

    :-)

  7. October was my first net gain so far. :-(
I gained 4 pounds for the month, rather than lose the 6.

I'll end October with 270 lbs.
For November I'm going to shoot for 6 lbs again. It'll probably be
easier to reach since I know the next four pounds are water weight.

    Did you change something?

    Did you change something?

Well my weekly drops should decrease as the amount of weight I needed
to lost came way down. I've lost 80 of the 125 lbs I wanted, so I
    won't be losing 2-4lbs a week anymore!

However the change I consciously made was I moved to a maintenance
level of carbs for the summer. This would slow my loss and give me a
chance to experience what my permanent eating habits would be like. I
still was losing 1 lb a week on average but October just had one too
many temptations. A visit to a bread bakery, going out with friends to
new restaurants, eating at friends' houses, Ben & Jerry's Karb Karma
ice cream showed up. There were also some stresses in there, which may
have help to trigger the overindulgences. I can think of one night
when personal stress obviously triggered an over-eating late-night
    binge.

I did see a new low of 263 lbs(-3 lbs) during the month, my goal was
261(-6lbs/month). So I think I did lose 4 pounds but as the end of
month hits I'm bouncing around 269-271. I can swing up about 7-8 lbs
in water weight. If I do Induction level carbs I've dropped 8 lbs in 8
days, but I'm NOT fond of doing Induction anymore. I'll live with not
making the goal and hopefully come in with more than 6 lbs for
    November. ... despite Thanksgiving...

  10. It sounds like the social aspects of eating became a problem for you. Do
you have any idea what your new daily carb level is?

I have wondered how many carbs it takes to trigger a return of carb
cravings. Induction levels are a bit extreme, but I have found a nice
collection of low carb high fat foods to keep me comfortable. My net carbs
usually average 27. I know I can still lose weight at 50 carbs per day, but
I worry that carb cravings might someday return.

I worry that carb cravings might someday return.

Well I don't see me living my life at under 30 carbs a day, so I
*HAVE* to learn to live with a higher average level of carbs. And
chocolate cravings are the worst for me... I've always loved the
stuff. But I love other foods that are carby (fresh baked breads,
Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Pizza) After ten months, I just
dont' want to constantly say "nope, can't have that today". I'm trying
to not make foods forbidden or guilt-ridden and work them in with
reasonable amounts. I'm also not counting at all, so I'm not sure what
my average carbs are. I know I've had plenty of 100+ carb days in the
last three months. I just counter my high days with lower days and try
to compensate--like using low carb desserts, milk, drinks etc.

I'm actually doing well considering. I'm studying everyday for 3+
hours at local coffee shops (need to be out of the house). Typically
I'm surrounded by cookies, cakes, pies, sandwiches, and specialty
coffees that have as many carbs as a milkshake. Despite the daily
temptation I've stuck to low carb and avoided the sugars. While
clocking about 30 days of temptations I've given in about 5 times
    while studying.

The social aspects will *NEVER* go away, so again, the sooner I focus
on learning to live with them the sooner I will get them under
control. There are issues outside dieting which I'm dealing with which
I think have contributed significantly to weight gain. I'm working on
those as well, so it isn't all disciplining yourself about food.
SOmetimes it is other aspects of your life you need to straighten out
    before food problems become manageable.

Though this week was a good example of why I love low-carbing--the
forgiveness factor! On Wednesday went with a large group to a mexican
resturant to support a local school team (20% of bill donated to
team). Difficult to low-carb with mexican, and the food looked good so
I ended up with a cup of chili, and a BBQ burrito filled with rice,
beans and meat. Split a chocolate torte with ice cream for dessert. I
bounced up about two pounds. Friday I ate a half-salad with crisp
noodles & a sweet dressing and a half-panini(fresh baked) cuban pork.
Also had a pumpkin spice(30-60 carbs) coffee. Again I bounced up 2 lbs
next morning. Saturday, A panini for lunch, buffalo wings and grouper
with veggies for dinner. Pepperoni & cheese for snack. I lost 3 lbs.
Any day I stick to reasonable calories & low-carbing the weight drops
off fast. Any gains are water weight (storage of glucose in muscles
and liver) and likely not fat buildup. Which means

Actually I did eat the beanless chili, but considering the sweetness
of it, it had carbs added--as is a danger with a lot of chili recipes.
But i'm sure you knew that.

Most of your choices are not particularly "mexican" to me. I eat those
choices in other restarants and even diners. If I'm going to go to a
good ethnic restaurant I'm going to have something I can't find done
well elsewhere, not eat a Grilled Chicken Salad with Salsa on top to
pretend it is mexican food. I'm also not going to eat out what I
constantly make at home(fajitas without shell). To me the staples of
mexican offerings would be the variety of burritos, empanadas,
chimichangas, enchilados, tamales, rellenos, tostada, quesadillas,
plaintains, etc. And most dishes would be served with refried beans
and/or rice. Similarly, the vast staples of Italian food revolve
around pasta. This doesn't mean you can't do it. It simply means MANY
choices are eliminated--which is why I don't bother going to Italian
or Mexican restaurants because SO MUCH of the menu isn't appropriate
that the offerings are merely boring.

  14. I lost some weight in October, but I don't remember the exact numbers.
Weight loss is slowing down now that I'm 14 pounds from my preliminary
goal. (I may revise it downwards a bit once I see how I look when I
    reach it.)

I'll shoot for three pounds in November. Starting at 144, so my goal
    is 141.

Yesterday was fun -- someone on Freecycle was giving away three bags
of size 8 clothes. I sorted them into one bag of stuff that I didn't
like (and someone else from Freecycle will take those away today), one
bag of stuff that fits now, and one back that should fit in a couple
of months. I think I'm really a size 12 or maybe 10, but a surprising
number of the size 8 things looked good on me.

  15. I know nothing of home Mexican cooking, but local Mexican restaurants in the
Silicon Valley have mostly carby stuff. The most authentic (I'm told it is
authentic) has recipes from Southern Mexico. Every dinner choice comes with
a pile of beans and rice.

Carnitas, envueltos (grilled shrimp wrapped with bacon), fajitas (any
kind, just eat the meat), queso fundido or chile con queso without
tortillas, grilled chicken/avocado salad, guacamole, chili colorado,
chicken breast with cheese and salsa verde...

Eat what you want, and what works for you, but "difficult to low-carb
with Mexican" sounds like a rationalization.

Everything I mentioned is available at the major chains; Chevy's,
Acapulco, South of the Border, etc, as well as the independents. I lived
in the Silicon Valley for years.

I've found very few places that physically assault you for not eating the
    rice and beans.

But almost all of them make you pay for them whether you want them or
    not.
