I have a Specialized hybrid from 1994 with Altus A-20 components. The rear deraileur is having a problem. I noticed the chain sagging one day and thought maybe it had stretched, but later discovered that the rear deraileur is supposed to automatically swing rearward, keeping the chain tight. This wasn't happening. When I push it forward by hand, it doesn't spring back. On my new mtb, it does. I can't find anything that I can adjust to make it work again, even though I've tried a few things. Is there a spring that must've fallen out or something?
I'm ready to toss this bike if I can't fix it. Already 11 years old. But I'd like to get what use out of it (as my clunker bike) that I can.

There's a spring in a housing right next to the top jockey wheel and that's probably died and gone to spring heaven. There's bugger all anyone can do about that. Or it's full of [censored]. Drown it in WD40 or some other light spray oil, and that might free the spring. It's a long shot at best. If that doesn't work you'll need a new derailleur. They're pretty cheap.

Hmmm....just 2 or 3 years? This is a hybrid bike meant mostly for the road, which is probably why it lasted longer. I suppose mtb's would wear out quicker because of all the dirt getting into them. I'll try the WD40 solution to see if that solves it. Deraileurs may be cheap, but the labor of getting a bike shop to replace it for me would be the expensive part. I wouldn't know the first thing about changing one.

If you can't change out a rear derailleur (a simple procedure), then you're better off taking the bike to a bike shop anyway.

A died spring is different from pivot wear chucklehead. If derailers only had a 2 or 3 year life, alot of folks would be in real deep sheot. 🙄 Park mentions pivot wear. Nothing about 2 or 3 years. Ask any mechanic in a decent LBS thats been around for a while, and they will say worn derailleurs are one of their more common replacement jobs. Considering a new derailleur can be bought for less than a tenner, alot of folks would not be in deep sheot. If Shimano, Campagnolo or one of any number of manufacturers made their components to last longer, they would lose alot of profit. I'm guessing here, but I'll bet a quarter of their sales are generated by aftersales in the private sector, i.e, you and me. I agree, the 2-3 year wear statement is whacked. I've got a 105 rear from the old 8 speed days that is smooth as silk. Rear der swap out is a piece of cake, especially with a powerlink chain!

Can't you read? Genxsis said he runs Altus A-20. Not chrorus/record. That was your first mistake. At that end of the component market, 2-3 years is about average. That was your second screw-up. As for the meds, I'll asume you were being sarcastic. Your third mistake. As it happens, I'm diabetic and do actually inject insulin 4 times a day.
