Has anyone used any of the mapping software out there to map out favorite
routes. I just returned from a small cycling camp and was disappointed w/
the maps/directions for our routes. I have seen some really nice maps
showing both mileage and elevation profiles for one day and multi-day tours.
I was just wondering what software is used to develop these and if it is
pricey or difficult to use. Any experience out there.
thanx in advance,
Andy

with pretty good results. There were several output options. You can

news:[email hidden]:Delorme Topo USA is good for determining mileages and elevations (but not
total elevation because it grossly overcounts), it is difficult to produce
a useful map. To get the whole map on one page, you lose a lot of detail
(like street names). Unfortunately, other mapping software I've used has
been worse.I usually take a regular map paper map (Krebs Cycling, AAA, etc.), scan it,
and highlight the route in Photoshop Elements. I can generate a cue sheet
with SADtoCue from Delorme.--

I have the DeLorme stuff (both Streets and Topo). I also have their
Bluetooth logger. SO, provided I can finish in about 8 hours total
(battery considerations), I can download the points, turn them into a
"line", then turn the line into a route.andy said:

thanx in advance,
AndyOn my website I have a little tool that uses google maps, very similar
to the "gmap pedometer". It computes distance, but not elevation.
It's very simple, maybe too much in many cases, but you it's a quick way
to estimate distances.

I use DeLorme TopoUSA. I like the fact that it not only gives me a map,
but a ready made cue sheet (route slip in the Western US), with
extremely accurate mileages (99%). Both for total mileages and point to
point distances.I have discovered one thing though, Total elevation gain is WAY off.
When mapping out the route of a favorite organized ride, the total given
by DeLorme was about _50%_greater_ than the advertised gain given by the
ride organizers. Curious, I mapped out three other rides, by three
seperate organizers, in three different states from California to
Carolina. ALL of them were calculated out with 50% more climbing by
DeLorme.Coincidence? I think not. Ever since then, whenever I have made route
map with DeLorme I have cut the total elevation gain by a third.- -
