Master Lock mechanism jammed

Try spraying a lot of PlusGas? When my lock seized (I broke
two of the three keys trying to get the damn thing to open)
I went home and returned with the hallowed WD-40. One spray
and it worked fine. Try drowning your lock in the stuff. If
that doesn't work then a very try a big pair of
boltcroppers?

Hope you unlock it before someone else does.

them. Owner can't unlock it, leaves it while they work out
what to do, scally comes back at a quiet time, cuts lock,
leaves with bike

What its US equivalent is is not really relevant in
UK.rec.cycling in just the same way we do not need to add

Yes, the nuclear option... I'd be well-annoyed to get only
one use out of the b*gger but it might come to that..

I'll give the WD-40 a shot and see what happens.

BTW gents I should have pointed out: the bike is chained up
at the bottom of the stairs in a secure hallway so I'm
counting out foul play from my neighbours and there isn't
much chance of it getting nicked - as far as the jammed
mechanism is concerned I'm assuming either 'operator error'
or [censored] workmanship.

It was from "scallywag", a maritime favorite... Still used
by modern sailors.

If you see evidence of superglue, or have good reason to
suspect it (like no rotational slop in the plug at all) you
might try heating up the plug with a fine tipped propane
torch. (you might call it a blowpipe in the UK). Sometimes,
it is possible to heat up a key with a torch or even a Zippo
lighter then wiggle it hard to break the superglue. (This is
also an effective cure for frozen locks, though not on locks
that have plastic parts!)

Personally, I think that locks that are liberally lubed with
one or another of the dry film wonder lubes (I like Mobil 1
Spray Lube or Tri-Flow) resist glue vandalism much better
than a dry lock.

Apparently the increasingly powerful cordless tools, allow
thieves who target bikes, to angle grind through the lock.
I know from experience (no... I didn't steal the bike!)
that it only takes about 15secs to cut clean through a
(admittedly cheap) D-lock. I would hope that the modern
ones are tougher, but it does put a good case for cable
and chains as these are harder to get a purchase on*.

That's interesting. I think the more expensive ones may be
better - I used to have a £30 Patriot D-lock that seized up
and had to be ground down - which took a few minutes with a
mains powered grinder IIRC. Lots of noise and sparks. Of
course, all the vibration unjammed the lock and it worked
perfectly later on. The maintainence chap said it was the
first lock of any type he hadn't been able to cut through
with bolt cutters, so it sounds as if your lock problem is
far from uncommon, whatever the type of lock.

For a long time my choice of bike security has been to use
two different types of device. My combination is usually a
D-lock and a flexible armoured cable lock. The theory is
that in addition to the obvious fact that there are now
twice as many locks to breach, two different types of tool
are also needed. I also have reasonably secure parking at
work (outdoors but with access to staff only).

On the rare occasions that my bikes are left out of sight in
public I still use the above technique but will often remove
the front wheel and carry it with me.

Had a similar problem a few weeks ago with one from
H+lf+rds. A big hammer did the business (at the cost of a
dent in the top tube). Bah!
