I was offered a "deal" by a local bike shop guy and wanted to get some input before I pull out my wallet.
I was offered a Mavic Ksyrium Elite (Clincher) Wheelset, Brand new, never mounted, no tires, no cassette for $400.00.
I've been out of the loop for a while and don't really know products/prices and what's the norm or what's a steal. Does this sound like a good deal or am I being handed my ass?

excelsports and others sell em for $550, and you can probably do better than that. I wouldn't pay $400, for em, but straight money wise, it's not bad. People buy em for the bling factor. I'd put my money in open pros with DA hubs.
t myself am thinking of buying set of mavic Ksyrium elites, i am after a good climbing wheelset. given my budget, would you guys recommend ultegra laced to open pros? do you know the weight of this setup. thanks
Sorry phillip, I do not see the point of most of the boutique wheelsets, and especially of kysrium elites. You don't even get the ooh-ahh factor!
The ultegra/open pro setup sounds like a fine wheelset. Strong, smooth and absolutely reliable. A nice pair of wheels like the ones you are proposing, built by a good wheelbuilder, are absolutely unbeatable. I am not aware of the weight tho. And in any event, are you sure that you cannot lose any weight yourself before thinking of shaving a couple of hundred grams on one of the most important components on your bike?
If you want really smooth hubs, go campagnolo (yes I am biased)!
