  1. These attempts to blame McDonalds (or other fast food
restaurants) for some people's getting fat is unbelievably
stupid and irresponsible. First, people are responsible for
their own actions. Freedom and responsibility are two sides
of the same coin, and I prefer to retain the freedom to
order whatever I want and not have some do-gooding moron
tell me what to eat. Secondly, you CAN get a balanced meal
at McDonalds. Just today I had a Big Mac with everything on
it and a side salad. I was perfectly happy with the
nutritional value of my lunch. If the public came in and
they all asked for salads, then McDonalds would provide it
for them. It is not McDonalds place to hold the hands of
irresponsible and stupid people and make them order balanced
meals. McDonalds has these massive salads (which I did not
order today). There is no law saying that a person cannot
order one of these salads. It is not McDonalds fault if
salads tend to be boring. It is not McDonalds fault if
healthy tends to be boring. If lots of people ordered these
massive salads, then McDonalds would provide more and would
    probably raise the price.

I find it a threat to my way of life for stupid and
irresponsible people to blame someone else for the very
problems that they have brought upon themselves. These
idiots are as much a danger to the American way of life as
    is Al Qaeda.

  2. It **IS** McDonald's fault, however, for hiding extra sodium
    and fats in their products.

Exactly! Eating a proper diet is just too hard for
most people and they skip right to the fast foods and
    ready mades.

Our family table provides a variety during the
week...several different vegetables, chicken, lots of fish,
some beef, and my own, award winning, vegetable lasagna.

We also exercise. I walk a mile to work, walk home for the
afternoon school bus, and back to the office on foot. I do
this regardless of the weather. With this regimen, I get in
4 brisk one mile walks a day, at a minimum. We often walk in
the evenings or jog behind my son's wheelchair when he does
his laps at our school's track.

Exercise opportunities are there, if you look for them.

That's a nice amount of exercise. I wish there was a safe

On another group, we were discussing exercise for those who
cannot walk. My son works out seven days a week, to one
degree or another. Some are just limbering up, others are
for strngth building. He does aerobic daily. And, all
without the use of his legs.

  11. Quick fixes such as a magic pill and blaming others for
one's own shortcomings is all the rage these days. I think
its not only irresponsible but down right stupid for people
to blame fast food for their health. Note to person sucking
down Big Macs: you made the choice to eat them now you have

And do you think the marketing boards of these products have
not promoted them to create a desirable image of their

We don't have bears here but do have rabid skunks and wild
dogs. I fear these wild dogs more than skunks or the
occasional rapist. After a friends daughter was pulled off
her horse and raped by 3 men I stopped walking around the

That's fantastic. Males do seem to enjoy working out so much
more than us women. I was going to the gym in town for
almost a year but the tedium and boredom were more than I
could handle. I only lose 2 lbs during all those months.
Working out does nothing for weight loss I found. There were
almost all men there as well. I was never comfortable. With
summer coming I'll be working outside in the yard almost
every day. I will also continue to watch everything I eat.

I agree it is their own fault. Even Wal-Mart has cheap books
on dieting and calorie counting. If they're too poor to
purchase a few books they can visit their local library.
There is no reason for people to reach levels of obesity
that cost them their health and often their lives. Just take
a look at the foods in the shopping carts around you the
next time you're at the grocery store. You'll see large
amounts of cookies, cake, pies, frozen pizzas, chips, soda,
crackers .... foods that should be considered rare snacks
seem to be many people's main dish these days. Don't these
people have TV? All Americans have to have some basic idea
of a healthy diet. You wont see many fresh vegetables,
fruit, fish and other healthy foods in their carts. The fast
food restaurants here are doing a rip-roaring business. Each
meal they serve has enough calories to supply a 6' ditch
digger his whole days supply of energy. Whatever happened to
portion control? The obesity rate in my area runs over 50%.
That's not including those overweight and on their way to
obesity. Our children are also overweight and diabetes is
skyrocketing. The stores now have those electric carts for
the disabled and hugely obese who can barely walk. They're
almost always utilized by an morbidly obese person. It's a
    sad situation.

  17. Yes, we notice that distressingly when we last visited
Florida that half the people there were extremely obese
to the point of barely being able to walk. We have the

but I have never seen anybody as disabled as half the

Be careful there. If you're talking about the US, only 15%
of our children (that is, 3 out of 20) are overweight. It's
true that the *relative* increase in overweight is rather

Only 15%? Are you talking obesity or just being overweight?
I saw a show on TV claiming 40% (another show claimed 50%)
are now overweight or above their ideal weight. These kids
are at risk. I don't remember the % already obese or
dangerously obese. Look at the rate of child obesity in The
Bronx NY for example. Especially among the Hispanic
population. Diabetes there is more and more common each
year, in fact they called it an epidemic. The NY News
covered this issue just a few months ago. Children as young
as 7 and 8 are developing adult onset diabetes in never
before seen numbers. It's increasing in the children where I
live as well. Our local News is constantly talking about the
    obesity/overweight problem in my state.

    It's true that the *relative*

Lets hope the dieting works! Diabetes can be a killer and
crippler. Children should not be put at risk because of
their diets and lack of exercise. I believe too many working
mothers are taking the easy way out with TV/PC baby-sitters
    and super-sized fast food meals.
