  1. He doesn't climb well enough to do more than hang on when
the going gets steep, so his chances of a Giro podium spot
are slim at best. However, what about in the TdF? With more
TTing and fewer mountain goat stages, might he make the
podium? Can he maintain his present great form long enough
    to even try?

What about McGee taking a shot at the hour record? He's got
the trackie background, seems to have raised his game to a
new level, and w/ two GTs under his belt should be
phenomenally strong (IIRC, the year that Boardman set the
pursuit and hour records was the only year he finished the
TdF). Either that, or he'll be completely burned out...

What about the 9mi ITT up the Duez? Isn't this like a double
whammy for him. Meaning this: you say he could benefit from
the time trials, but he can't climb. So this stage will
actually hurt him PLUS he has to complete it on his own.

I bet the crowds for stage 16 & 17 will be enormous this
year. I wonder how many accidents there will be. I'm sure
there's nothing more fun than having to concentrating on a
hard climb while having to ride through tunnels of
spectators all slapping you on the back trying to motivate
you with their words of wisdom...

It's going to be crazy. I wonder if they'll put up a few
more barriers to keep the crowds back a little.

Think of who he'll have to beat to get on the podium. Lance,
Jan, Tyler, Mayo, Zubeldia, Basso, Leipheimer, Heras, etc. I
think the competition for the third spot will be very tough
    - maybe even the best "race within the race".

  5. Maybe in 2005/2006. I think the Olympics are more of a goal
for him in 2004. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him
focus more on stage races after this season. Would help if
he had some pure climbers on his team.

I think the problem is that they can not install 18 miles of
barriers (9 miles times two sides).

Damn, that was my pick too.

I sure hope they do. Yeah, I know it's a tradition to
let it happen as it does, with all kinds of people
milling about, but it might be time to put that
    tradition to rest.
