    Serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) has been widely used
    as an index of liver dysfunction and marker of alcohol
    intake. The last few years have seen improvements in these
    areas and advances in understanding of its physiological
    role in counteracting oxidative stress by breaking down
    extracellular glutathione and making its component amino
    acids available to the cells. Conditions that increase
    serum GGT, such as obstructive liver disease, high alcohol
    consumption, and use of enzyme-inducing drugs, lead to
    increased free radical production and the threat of
    glutathione depletion. However, the products of the GGT
    reaction may themselves lead to increased free radical
    production, particularly in the presence of iron. There
    have also been important advances in the definition of the
    associations between serum GGT and risk of coronary heart
    disease, Type 2 diabetes, and stroke. People with high
    serum GGT have higher mortality, partly because of the
    association between GGT and other risk factors and partly
    because GGT is an independent predictor of risk. This
    review aims to summarize the knowledge about GGT's clinical
    applications, to present information on its physiological
    roles, consider the results of epidemiological studies, and
    assess how far these separate areas can be combined into an
    integrated view.

    Among possible meat constituents, dietary heme iron, but
    not saturated fat, was associated with GGT. Dietary
    constituents typical of plant foods showed an inverse
    association. In contrast, vitamin supplements were
    positively associated with GGT. CONCLUSIONS: Serum GGT
    activity increased in a dose-response manner as alcohol
    and meat consumption increased and fruit consumption
    decreased. Heme iron contained in meats and
    micronutrients contained in fruits may influence GGT
    metabolism. However, micronutrients taken as supplements
    had a positive association with GGT.

  2. Posting this info after an interval of some weeks makes no
    better support of your thesis, using it, your thesis is
    clearly not supported still, sorry again.

  3. Only in your dreams. Almost ..EVERY.. article you post
    contridicts your thesis that iron,from meat, is ..THE..
    singular cause of disease/disorders. Even if you post and
    repost articles which happen to have "meat" or any of the
    other search terms you use everyday, adding all of them in
    one pot does ..NOT.. add up to a hill of discarded bones.
    They in their collictve content disprove your thesis. But if
    one only has a (iron) hammer, everything looks like a nail
    and every action is to shoehorn info into a failed thesis.
    This self abuse must wear on one after a time.

  4. British researchers showed people with low iron stores have lower iq,
    poorer cognative performance and other brain related deficits. If one
    purposily reduces one's iron stores below a certain level, it is
    reasonable to think their mental activities would likewise be affected.

  8. No Tom, it actually said anemia, that means iron level in
    this case, at any level poses mental problems. Is your
    reading perception a bit foggy these days? The other artcle
    said it poses lifelong problems for infants who are anemic,
    a good part of the veggie alone folk around the world, which
    is why it is the number one nutrition related problem. When
    we lok at what actually happens in the real world, your
    thesis is not supported, veggie alone eaters in s. asia have
    the world's highest rates and climbing of diabetes and
    associated heart disease etc. and are a direct, specific,
    overwhelming large population example of the failure of your
    thesis. Posting a thousand, nay ten thousand, nay ten
    million abstracts about iron doesn't negate this reality,
    doesn't support your thesis.

  9. No Tom, the articles said with certain preexisting
    disease/disorder conditions iron plays a role. Note the
    chain of logic, disease/disorder already exist and then
    iron. Iron didn't cause the preexisting condition, and as
    pointed out to you before, the presence of iron is a
    secondary effect of the presence of another substance. In
    plain language, iron tends to be more the tail then the dog,
    but in bio-systems many things are interrelated but some
    have more effect then others; in this case the preexisting
    conditions is the dog.

    tenuous, as far as supporting anything.

    I don't know, it would require knowing the individual case
    history of each prson in the research. All we can make
    deductions/infeerences about is what is in the info
    provided. They had preexisting diseases and level of iron
    followed and was not the cause of the diseases. Iron is the
    tail, not the dog. I do understand why you want to shoehorm
    yet again another abstract and make the tail wag the dog to
    do so, sorry, the very info you provide says no to your
    thesis. When you get a cold is it because the iron always
    in your body made it happen, or is a cold an independent
    variable? One answer is that low iron causes low immunity
    which makes getting a cold more likely if exposed. Even
    then low iron doesn't cause colds, a virus does. Diseased
    tissues might store more iron but the origin of the disease
    is not the iron.
