Megatrain - cycles barred

Wasn't there also a suggestion that services such as this where they
also have a monopoly on ticket sales have to be specially licenced, or
only operate on an experimental basis. Is the experimental period over
yet?

Wessex Electrics on the Waterloo - Poole line have a van with bike hooks.

They could enforce this rule at barriers with ticket checks.
Both Southampton and Portsmouth have barriers and megatrain passengers are
not allowed on or off anywhere else - or else.

Of course all Megatrain passengers with trouser clips could be challenged.

Well if they have then I wonder what the van for bicycles is that I
frequently see on their trains? I don't use it because I have a folding
Brompton but they are definitely there a lot of the time on the
Waterloo-Southampton line.

Don't know about Portsmouth but you could always get off at Southampton
Airport Parkway where there are no barriers. If you didn't want to
cycle the rest of the way for another £1 you could catch the Unilink bus
to other parts of Southampton. From my experience I doubt that they
would bother you at the barriers at Central either.

They seem *very* officious there to me.
I recently travelled from Andover and the peaked caps grilled me with
suspicion as to how I'd managed to get to Southampton without buying a ticket -
there were no ticket staff anywhere and no sign of a guard.

Come to think of it, the were probably getting their own back when they shunted
me into a siding a couple of weeks back.

Probably - but only if it is international journey costing more than
EUR50 (I think), which SWT doesn't do.

I've never seen any barriers at Portsmouth Harbour Station.
If there were ever ticket checks to get into the station, you could always
say you are getting the IW Cat.

I've never had my ticket checked to get on to the platform at Waterloo,
either.
But then I've not tried taking a bike on the train either !! :-)

As others have mentioned, the 442s have bike spaces in (what's left of)
the Guard's van - the 444s and 450s also have designated cycle areas.

Granted, there's not as much space as there was with the slammers, but
at least the space is there, which is more than can be said for things
like Electrostars (unless these have bike spaces that I've missed?)
