That sounds like a challenging ride. Were you planning to take the Hume Highway or the Princess Highway?

Personaly I think that the Princess Highway would be rather hazardous. There is a shoulder on most of the Hume highway you could ride on but from Albury for 80-100 km there isn't one. There are probably enough towns along the way to travel light altough I don't remember there being much between Melbourne and Albury.

There was the Bicentenial Ride in 88, which was 9 days or something.

Sydney-Canberra-Cann River-Melbourne is an option. You can basically avoid the Princes Hwy from Nowa Nowa (40km before Lakes Entrance) to Melbourne with some planning and without adding too much distance, or from Orbost if you don't mind doing some extra kms and a bit of climbing. It's all sealed roads.

There's plenty of small towns on the old Hume Highway, but if he sticks to the freeway, then yeah, nothing between Albury and Melb.

In 1987 I rode Mel, Yea, Benella, Beachworth, Tallangata, Corryong, Threadbo, Cooma, Canberra, Goulburn, Wollongong, Sydney. Great route lots of climbing, some backroads some main roads about 1200 km.

G'day mate,

did that ride 30 yrs ago and still remember every inch of the way. I used an old 3 speed hub bike, fitted with an old chrome luggage rack with a spring flap to hold everything on. like you i thought about 8-10 days. It took me 3 & 1/2 weeks- to much to see,- to many punchers,- to many people to meet and stay with, have meals with,- go fishing with and just plain shoot the breeze. I knew no-one on the way, now have friends all the way. Don't make the mistake of hurring. All my bikes have this quote on them "Live the journey, as the distination is just the starting point for another." By the way I carried a sleeping bag, tent, and a change of clothes, plus toothbrush, paste and toilet paper, all tied on with a piece of rope. Hey craig,... i am interested!! I have thinking abt it the whole year; whether it is possible in terms of my endurance and my finance... I am just an average cyclist level, so i dont know if i might be too slow for you though 😕 . And do you ride a mountain or racer?

Oh yah,.. i stay in melbourne, guess one of us got to make a plane trip first..

This is something along the lines of what you were looking for .... bit longer 1200km inside 15 days. But then with Audax lucky they allow you that long they are doing Perth Albany Perth 1200km in 4 days Sat morning to Tuesday evening.....
