Michigan Upper Peninsula to Door County

No ferries from the UP to Wisconsin. Probably not worth it to get
yourself to Ludington. Did you have a direction in mind (e.g.
clockwise or CCW)?

CCW - starting in Chicago, around the south end of the lake, then
north along the like in Michigan. A couple of years ago I went north,
then took the ferry to Ludington, missing a good portion of the
shoreline in Michigan.

Darn, it sounded like a fun adventure - taking a boat & the bike to
the tip of Door County and then continuing south.

CCW - starting in Chicago, around the south end of the lake, then

FWIW, at the tip of mainland Door County (Gills Rock), there is
regular ferry service to Washington Island, and less frequent service
from Washington Island to Rock Island. However, short of chartering a
boat or hitching a ride, you can't get to or from the UP.

Speaking of Door County, I'll be up there for a long weekend mid-July
(staying right off Hwy B north of Sturgeon Bay). How's the riding on the
peninsula when the tourists are out in force? And how's the Ahnapee State
Trail? That looks like it could be a good day's ride by itself, but I'm
not familiar with that particular corner of the Dairy Empire.

I'm on a road bike with 25's, so if the trail is rough gravel, please
warn me off of it now!

Good news and bad news for you. Hwy B, blending into G is an
excellent route from Surgeon Bay to Egg Harbor. Light traffic as the
through traffic is up on 42, good bay views throughout, not much
climbing. It's one of my favorite Door County routes, though better
yet is Glidden Drive on the Lake Michigan side of the Peninsula - low
hills, a winding road and more picturesque. Then at the north end,
stay as near to the Lake as you can and keep going north and you'll
run in to Cave Point County Park, where you have some beautiful low
rock formations right at the Lake across from the parking lot.

The bad news is that the Ahnapee trail is not good riding for a bike
with narrow tires.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking at perhaps a nice loop of the peninsula, so
this would play right into my plans.
