  1. Is there a moderated group that sticks to topic without tons of flamage? While I find the flamage
funny at times, there are times that I really just want some good running advice without being
called an [censored] (go ahead, reply with my 'assholeness'😉...

    Any advice?

Just tell me what you prefer to be called and I'll use those terms.

  3. I was going to suggest that it would be easier for you to post more intelligently, to avoid being
called an [censored]. Then I realised how wrong I was.

I don't think there's a moderated USENET group, although there might be one on, say, the Runner's
    World website.

However, I've found that I enjoy this group much more since I've started killfiling anyone who makes
    even one out-of-line post.

    Alternatives:

try using filters if you read directly from a news server, but creating the filters can be tough
(ones that keep out the junk but don't also keep out some good messages)

try an archive service like GOOGLE. (doesn't totally help filter things out either, but less work)

Is there a discussion group on the runners world web site? Presumably it's moderated? (hate to see
you leave here, but if you want clean discussions it might be an option worth considering.)

try putting together the votes for creating a moderated group. (Key is finding volunteers with the
    time and skill to moderate.)

Last option, tough it out and ignore the trolls. Not a great choice, but it just takes a little more
    time to browse the group.

Funny is that what has begun to annoy me more are the crossposted threads that are totally OFF
TOPIC: things about Iraq or eating disorders, or others. Groups are named by topic for a reason!

Have a good run and a good read. Ed

Golly! I guess you're not a core member of my fan base.

Since quoting is a skill for real computers, I decided to try to narrow down who it's talking
about amongst the regulars. After 18 hours I realize it's a lost cause, and that didn't narrow the
    field any.

RW has some good discussion groups, esp. for trail/ultra for some things (slow sometimes also),
which may not be applicable for this person. For me, it's a nice in between for r.r and the ultra
list, although I seldom post and only read about half the topics (I hate browser-based forums). I'm
not sure that it's moderated, but you have to register to post (not to read).

One of the big differences there is they have everything split into a different groups - beginners,
training, injuries, nutrition, training, masters, high school, marathon, etc. That is, it looks like
the beginners are left to flounder on their own or maybe some kind, more experienced souls visit
occasionally. I think the groups lack cross-fertilization of ideas by doing that. OTOH, it does
provide a friendlier environment for certain types of discussions.

I far prefer r.r for most things because you get a better mix of ideas - and filters work wonders.
Newsreaders are faster than browsers, at least for me. And search capabilities are much superior
here via google. Some types of questions I'm more likely to ask in RW trail forum since they have
more experience in certain things there, and there's more Alaskans there.

FWIW, there's a moderated and unmoderated mt bike ng. The unmoderated is far more active and seems
to have the hard-core mt bikers, although I don't visit the moderated one much any more - once I
found the other. With the moderated, if the moderator is out of town, it may take days for posts to
appear, but that might be an artifact of that particular group.

I just hit "ignore thread" at the first sign of one of those.

Ther are a few groups that are moderated but none related to running. Who the hell would have the
time to play policeman? That leaves a lot of power with the moderator and what constitues a "proper"
post. Sure you get rid of some trash mouth wanking dorks but what about those like the pseudo dr.
like Roger who trolls to a different beat.

    I object!

Sir, you do me considerable disservice. I'm not simply a 'pseudo dr.' but a
pseudo *everything*. I'll thank you to word your put-downs more carefully next time, lest you
provoke me to kick the sleeping dog of hydrating on long runs once again.

  18. Hello, Allow myself to re-introduce......myself. For those who do not know me I am the most read
and feared poster to this newsgroup. Ed Prochack, Ultraclown, Roger Hunter, and the ever pitiful
Bill Rogers loath and fear me equally. Yet they lack the ability to comprehend the depth of my
influence. I have been on vacation. Lock the doors and hide your daughters. As always... You are
    all a bunch of [censored].
