  1. Had my first ride of the year, having been to a newyears bash in Cornwall and stayed over.

The first hazard was my camouflage. It was mid/late morning and I was heading broadly southeast.
With bright, low winter sun shining on glistening wet roads, what better way to hide than a bright
    yellow stripe blending right in?

Anyway, I crossed the Tamar back into England at Gunnislake, and got up the hill out of the river
valley with effort but without incident. Getting onto the downhill and an exposed stretch of road, I
fuund the gusty wind was blowing me about, so I slowed down, whereupon [censored] #1 passed me close on
a blind bend (fortunately a car coming the other way put the brakes on and hugged the hedge). Next
thing I know, a tractor comes the other way, and [censored] #2 accelerates straight at me from behind
it: the most scary moment I've had on that road for as long as I can remember, and that includes
hitting ice on it I-forget-how-many winters ago.

From two in as many minutes, the [censored] count was way up on anything one gets accustomed to in
this part of the country - where even white van man is normally careful and considerate. There was
even a second case of accelerating at me from behind a tractor, though on a wider road where it
    wasn't a problem.

Anyway, glad to be home, and hoping today was a one-off not a trend:-(

Sadly, I think the general standard of driving is falling and courtesy between road users
    falling too :-(

Glad you weren't hurt in any way other than gaining a few gray hairs!

    Cheers, helen s

When I lived in Plymouth I found the drivers incompetent but generally good-natured. Round here
    they're incompetent *and* homicidal.

I got the "Charley Says" DVD [1] for Christmas. I've only watched the first few films so far, but
they include a "Don't be rude on the road" campaign from the late 50's and early 60's. I think it's
    high time they were repeated.

    Scary stuff for us thirtysomethings.

Anyway ... even as a little boy, I wondered whether the moral of the "charlie" story was that
you should just bugger off without telling mummy, otherwise you'd have to have a picnic without
    your friends.

Another diversion.... doesn't "central office of information" sound rather orwellian.

mrowmrowmrowmrowmrow was the noise charlie made IIRC. There was some technohousey single of it a
few years ago. I remember Tommy Vance playing it on the chart radio show, he didn't know it was a
    sample ;-)

Yeah - "Charley" by The Prodigy, before they were really famous.

So famous that I can't actually off the top of my head remember anything else they did!

I was just checking out the amazon site with a picture of the Charley
DVD. I notice one of the films is called _think bike_ No connection with the spoof one from the
Young Ones, Think once, think twice, think don't drive your car on the pavement ;-)

I found 2 called "Think Bike", No 106 from 1978 and No 137 from 1975. Both are about motorbikes.

The only title that looks like it's got anything to do with cycling is No 117, "Bicycle Thefts",
which I haven't seen yet. Oh, and maybe No 81, "Broken Glass".

Anyway, I'm off to watch some more.

I saw a tiny 'Think bike' sticker on the back of some police car/van a couple of weeks ago. I think
there was a website address to go with it, too, but I've forgotten other details.

    Bizarrely, Nozama says:

Customers who bought this item also bought:

"The Complete Mary, Mungo And Midge [...] Communism - The Great Belief Of The 20th Century"

which must rank alongside IMBD's "If you like this title, we also recommend... Happy Days
    (1980) (TV)"

The /"this title"/ in question was "Waiting For Godot".

I was looking for a DVD of The Importance of Being Earnest for Mrs. Hall (Senior).

Nozama suggested I might also like Reproduction (Remastered) by The Human League. I boggled for a
while, then went on my way.
