I am in the market for a decent but not too expensive mountain bike and have run into some really good deals on some Motobecane and Iron Horse (2006) models around 400-600 bucks... I have heard mixed reviews about Motobecane but from what I gather they have great components comparatively to other vendors in that pricepoint.. Does anyone have any experience here? A am looking for a full susupension bike for around 5 bills and am a MTB newbie ( I wont be jumping any cliffs with it yet )..

For that kind of money you should get a decent hardtail or maybe go used. New FS bikes that cheap have cut some serious corners to get to that price.

I assume ebay is still the best place to find used? So far I have bid on 3 but at the last minute, got outbid... ;(

It can be good if you really know what you want. If you are just shopping it can be hit and miss. If you can ride any of these bikes before buying that would be a good thing to do. The best bike in the world is no good for you if it doesn't fit or suit your riding style.
MTBR.com also has a classified ads and you might find something good there. But that forum is less regulated than eBay so while there can be good deals and good people, there's less mechanisms to keep out the bad. Make sure you are covered and if it sounds too good it probably is.
Same for Craigslist.

I'd like to back everything Matt said 100%, and add pawnshops to the list of hit-or-miss spots to find a great deal. If calling pawnshops first, make sure to ask if they *have* any bikes, as opposed to "Do you deal in bikes" or something of the like. The place I got my full suspension Marin for next to nothing told me they didn't deal in bikes on the phone. When I bought it we were talking, and the guy told me he thought I was looking to pawn one when I called asking if they dealt in them and he said no due to lack of space in the shop for another bike. It needed some TLC, but I feel like I stole it for what I paid.

I'm not familiar enough with the brands in question to specifically advise you to go with one make over the other two. I'd worry more about fit and try to ride all options available at said price point, and decide which ones fit you the best and are the most comfortable. Once you've got it down to a couple that fit, compare components. Are any of them orange? Orange is the way to go.
Go to bikesdirect.com and get a motobecane . You wont find a better bike fr the money. A full suspension at that price will be walmart quality. Get a nice hardtail or spend more and get a god full susp. Remember, most bike have frames made in the same mega factories in china so there are few differences there.
