MTB gear systems

Mountain bikes usually have triple-ring cranksets (either 22-32-42/44 or
24-34-46) and wide-range cassettes (11-32 or -34). 9-speed is the norm, but
8- and 7-speed still out there.

I've got one 9 speed with 44-34-22 up front and 12 -34
on the rear. My 8 speeds are 42-32-32 or 44-34-24 up front and 12-34 or
12-28 in rear. And my last 7 speed left is 42-22-32 up front and 11-32
in rear. I plan on up grading one of my 8 speeds soon which will be
44-34-22 up front and 12-34 and all Sram drivetrain X9,X Generation,PC
99,X9,and Truvativ.

I arrived at mine by determining what was the highest speed I could maintain on
the flats for, say, three minutes - and then choosing the gear where I'm spun
out at that speed. Could have gone one gear higher, I guess...
