Mtb upgrade

Get a spacer that allows you to put a 7 speed cassette on an 8/9 speed
hub (Shimano 9 speed hubs are the same as 8 speed- the difference is
the spacing between cogs, not the overall width).

For $3.50 plus shipping (save the shipping- find one at a local bike
shop) you can use the new wheels and keep everything else the same.

According to other users of Dolomites, the bearings will eat royal $hit in
the rain or mud. If you don't particularly care about the wheels, then have
at it.

My bearings have held up well over the years but it's the rear freehub body
that gets loose. I've gone through several of them. Fortunately they're
only $25 bucks.

If you're looking to up grade the whole drivetrain and shifters take a close
look at the new trigger shifters from SRAM. The thumb-only action is very
crisp and allows you to maintain a good grip on the bar while shifting.

Mark,

You can use the new 9speed wheels with your 7speed cassette and
drivetrain. just pull the 7spd cassette off your current wheels, and
get a spacer from your LBS. Slide the spacer on, then the cassette.
The spacer should not be more than a couple of bucks, if that. How's
that for cheap?

Another thought, if you are going to use the bike for road use, throw
on a 12x21 7 speed road cassette instead of the old MTB one. A new
chain might be a good idea as well. The cassette, chain and spacer
should still be under $50. A lot cheaper than going 9 speed.

With 9 speed, you are looking at: new cassette, new chain, rear
deraileur, new rear shifter. You might also have problems with the
narrow chain on the old 7speed crank. Sometimes the chain ring width
and spacing can be an issue with the narrow 9speed chain. I think the
7speed cassette is the best bang for the buck here.
