  1. This is my worst riding weekend in history. Hardly any sleep Friday night,
having just come home from a long trip. Saturday, went on an early-morning
lung-buster with one of my buddies. Bonked 3/4 of the way up.

Went home and took a nap. Got up, watched a couple of movies, fell asleep
again on the couch, woke up and couldn't stand all the way up.

Several hours in the jacuzzi and a handful of 800mg ibuprofens later, back
still hurts like hell. The weird thing is I have NO IDEA what I did to f*
up my back. It sucks getting old.

Band practice was good though. Hurt like hell but sounded good...

sleeping on the couch would do it for me....

That had to be it, I guess. I've slept plenty on that couch; even all night a
few times and felt fine. I don't get it...

The jacuzzi probably didn't help... In fact, it probably made things worse.
For me, on the advice of a few doctors in dealing with chronic back pain and
a serious spine condition, I use only cold treatment and massage (except
when massage is very painful, then it is best not massage it, or at most,
massage only very lightly in order to encourage blood flow).

Of course, sleeping on the couch usually results in a sore back.... at least
    it does for me

    Just my 2 cents.

    PaulW- mmm ibuprophen.

Welcome to my world. About 6 weeks ago (when I was still 48 $*&*#!), I woke
up and could barely walk. Sharp stabbing pain in my left lower back.
Didn't do /anything/ knowingly that would have caused it. (I *had* tried a
new saddle / ass-hatchet on my road bike, but only for 3 rides. No back
pain felt during those rides, just usual numbness and sore butt.)

Fortunately, I could still ride fairly OK after throwing out my back (for
lack of better term), but it hurt like hell just to put a foot down.

It's very gradually gotten better, but still stiff and sore.

Haven't played in a band since late '70s.

I'd have to "second" the thought that the hot tub may not have helped. My surgeon urged me to not use the hot-tub for at least 6 weeks following a surgery on my shoulder and stated a lot of stuff I didn't really pay attention to (too bumbed to focus I guess). I "forgot" the Doc's words one night and I have to admit that while it felt good in the tub, it got a bit tender (more than prior to the dip) later. What do I know though (not too damn much says the better half!)?

    Tommy Homicide:
I checked out your site and the "Ass Kicker" song is the goods. Nice work. I'm off to bang my Tamas now.

Yep. Same here. Getting out of bed this morning was not fun. This sucks. I
    hate being a vegetable.

Just a slightly different position, and you're in misery. I've had some
great naps on my couch, but I've also had some I really regretted.

Recent aches and pains of mine have done well with more moderate but
regular doses of vitamin I. The PDR (my wife :-) says you shouldn't
take more than 3200 mg/day. I'll take 600 mg 3 times per day for a few
    days with good results.
Are your stomach muscles in reasonable shape? Strong abs help support
your back and take some of the strain off those muscles. If your abs
need work, a few crunches after a ride work them out and stretch your
back at the same time. Works for me.
Growing old is relentless isn't it?

    Cheers,
    Shawn
