Good garlic press
Not necessary. Whacking it with a cleaver does just as well,
and it multitasks.
Quoted message said:Wooden spoon
Maybe not *essential*, but handy. Good for candymaking, and
certain cakes.
Quoted message said:non-stick teflon frying pan
I prefer cast iron. Except for making omelettes I don't use
any Teflon items. I might if I bought an electric griddle.
Quoted message said:jug - for sauces, etc.
What do you mean, "for sauces"?
Quoted message said:blender
I'd say a food processor, though even that's not an
"essential"; it does more things (though not necessarily the
same ones as a blender).
Quoted message said:casserole dishes
For what? Aside from casseroles.
Quoted message said:roasting pan
Agreed--but only for those with families or who host
dinners.
Quoted message said:salad spinner
Handy (especially when frying), but not an essential.
Quoted message said:potato masher
Hmmm... handy, but essential?
Quoted message said:spatula
Yes, but what sort? I use the stiff-plastic sort for
flipping pan-fried stuff (or taking cookies off the sheet),
and the flexible sort for mixing/pouring batter and
spreading molten candy.
For me, I'd say:
1) measuring cups (w/o rolled edges)--for dry measure
2) measuring spoons
3) measuring beaker--for liquid measure
4) vegetable peeler
5) water kettle (after getting my grandmother one of those
electric ones, I think I'd prefer that over the
stovetop sort)
6) good, heavy pot
7) oven mitts
8) cast iron frying pan. Great for baking, too (I won't
make cornbread or apple skillet cake without it)
9) cleaver
10) baking sheets
11) paring knife
If I absolutely had to limit myself to 10 things, that'd
probably be it, though there'd be things I'd miss.
