  1. Hi, my first post in the NG..
I'm a 71yo 6'2" 242 lbs male retiree (I worked at Cape Canaveral) living in
    cocoa beach florida.
After a bout of vertigo nastiness around Oct 15, I decided it was time to
drastically reduce my overweight (262 lbs) condition.

Its now Dec 15 and after a slow start my weight loss is definitely
accelerating in last 2 wks (down to 242 lbs)
which I credit to refining my initial diet down to 1000 calories with about
equal amounts carbs and protein with fiber being half as much (that isnt a
easy combo to achieve with a diet I think I can live with for an extended
    time)
Btw, yes, I'm feeling much better..

    My diet details are at:
    http://home.earthlink.net/~dave_gemini/calories.txt

I have a 200 lb goal in mind for 6 months out, any
    bets/comments/suggestions?

p.s. note MY recipe for 8 oz Chocolate Pudding

Whatever you're doing, which isn't exactly clear, it isn't one of the
common low carb diets. 1000 calories a day is very low for someone
your size and weight. I hope you're taking vitamin supplements too.

  4. Equal amounts of carbs and protein is not a low carb diet. Try getting
Atkins' book or Protein Power and do a real low carb diet and you will find
you don't have to cut your calories so drastically.

  5. Hi David -

Where did you get the idea to adjust your diet in such a manner?
Congrats on the weight loss, however.

I lost a bunch of weight myself (45 pounds and counting in the last 6
    months), although I took a different route than you - I didn't
intentially restrict my caloric intake at all, and instead basically
drastically lowered my carbs and redoubled my excercise program.

However, if your WOE works for you, that's nothing but good.

It may not be an Atkins diet, but for a guy at 240lbs with only one
thousand calories per day divided primarily between protein and carbs,
it *is* a low carb diet.

I lost a third of my body weight in less than three months last year on
a diet with pretty equal division between fat, carbs, and protein,
although I didn't go as low as 1000 calories; I kept it above 1800.

Low carb means different things to different people. I have no time for
Atkins or ketosis, yet I am still, when compared to prior habits, eating
low carb. I more than halved my carb intake, but still eat around 150
grams per day. I also managed to lose weight faster than most and am not
having any difficulty keeping it off eighteen months later. I am having
    trouble putting some back on.

    Regards

    David

Thanks for the welcome and comments,
I hope my going public adds a personal incentive to my staying the course
from 262 -> 200 lbs by extra embarrassment
if I cant follow the diet.

BTW. here is some info for anyone interested in duplicating the HI-PROTEIN
    HI-FIBER choc.pudding dessert.

    1. The LC, hi-protein WHEY powder was found at local Walmart (across from
    the Vitamin shelves)

    2. The pure psyllium powder is hard to find, I purchased 5lbs (about 10
    months supply) from www.nutritiongeeks.com
altho the in-house brand at Walmart (Equate) is acceptable as its orange
flavor is overwhelmed by the cocoa flavor
but I disliked having the artificial.sweetener and other ingredients
halving the fiber per Tbsp vs. the pure powder.

    re: Atkins vs. my diet
my diet uses foods I enjoy and yes I do use Vitamin supplements.

I find controlling my appetite is getting less of a problem the more I
    progress with this plan..
    An amusing side-effect,
my stomach growling is sometimes audible to others like that scene in a fav
    movie, "The African Queen"

OK, given these current facts for 15 Dec
    1. current wt = 242
    2. height 6'2"
    3. average 20 miles walking/week, but otherwise pretty sedentary
    4. 1000 calorie diet shown in link above.

Anyone care to translate these facts and their personal experience(s) to a
    weight prediction
for my next monthly report, 15 Jan?

Glad to hear it, and good going on the weight loss. It looks like you're
eating higher carb than most of us, but definitely lower than the standard
    American diet. It's working!

  11. At 70, elevated protein might make sense while doing calorie restriction,
since any muscle loss may not ever be regained. However, I would replace
the carb calories with fat calories. Ever tried coconut milk?

The "Optimal Diet" from Poland claims great results for seniors.
