I am 58 and have run for the past 25 years or so and last year I had
knee surgery because I had destroyed all of the cushioning in my knee.
It's been about a year now and the knee feels fine while doing normal
activities but on the few occassions I have attempted to run I feel some
pain for a day or so and I know I am doing more damage to my knee.
I think walking is boring and I can't ride my bike here in the
Midwest during the winter months so I really would like to do some form
of running even on a limited basis.
The surgeon who worked on me was not a sports physician and he just
told me my running days were over unless I was interested in having my
knee replaced.
What I want to know is if there is any type of a brace available that
I can wear that will take the pressure off my knee and allow me to run,
hobble, amble, etc? I only ran 3-4 miles at a time when I was healthy so
I'm not planning any marathons. Any Sports Physicians out there who can
help me?

Instead of going right back to running,
why do indoor spincycle?less impact, perhaps safer for your knee.
Meanwhile, come very light le-extension reps,
per directions given by experts on strengthening
knee-muscle area, eg, very, very light, but many reps. Then later, if you knee is is decent shape,
you can ease into running again.Or begin with elliptical, same approach.

Geez, and I get tired after an hour....

Maybe a silly answer -- but have you asked your physical therapist? Gone
back for a "tune up"? Or even <gasp!> asked another, more sports-oriented,
orthopedist? What else are you doing to strengthen and protect the joint?
