I have been active in mountain biking in the past and have decided to purchase a road bike for both an upcoming sprint triathlon and to continue riding on a flatter surface!! I have gone to a few bike stores and unfortunately most have tried to ram the more expensive tri bikes on me, which at my level, I definitely do not think I need or want. I talked to a local bike repair guy and he fitted me, gave me some suggestions and options. Among them are Mercier Corvus AL2005 and Windsor Fens 05, both from bikesdirect.com. I am a little concerned that there are not a lot of reviews for these bikes out there (at least that I could find). Should I be more concerned with the components on the bike instead of "brand name" of the bike? Any suggestions are appreciated!!!

Get the best frame you can for your money. Components can allways be upgraded as you get better. Don't skimp on the brakes either, those bikes can hit 70-75mph on the right hills. Giants are good to start with.
