Mike, they were on 04 Giant Perigee touring bikes as well. You can pick one of those second hand for the price of a pair of tyres. 😄

Thanks George, are you referring to the entire bike or the wheel or the rim? Any idea where I can get it?

you could use this as an excuse to upgrade the wheelset. 😄

Cellbikes isn't that far from me, I went in there and brought some new shoes the other week. While I was in there I was talking to the bloke who works there, who I also ride with on occasions and we discussed wheels, as I was thinking of the R500 too. He recons I should go for a R550 or R560, the R560 having slightly better hubs for an extra 10 or so $.

I agree that the R500 would be a worthwile upgrade, however my bike budget is a bit low at the moment, so I was looking for a low cost solution, therefor replacing the rim myself, but if I can't get the part a reasonable price, then new wheels it is.

I'll keep an eye on ebay for the 04 Giant Perigee.

Hopefully the wheel will last until next weekend, when I am doing the ride for life at Sydney's Centennial park.

Noooooooooo keep away from Shimano wheels. They have a few problems. Spoke breakages are pretty common and the spokes are a priopetry design and they cost ~$10 a pop. Get something else, find someone who hand builds wheels talk to them for awhile, and seriously it is not that much more expensive, and the wheels are so much better.

Oh yeah forgot, buying those wheels you are basically replacing what you have, save the bucks and buy something more expensive. Wheels are the single biggest improvement outside of riding more 😄 and you can always take wheels to another bike.

Agree 100% about good wheels being worth their weight in gold. Only problem is the lack of gold at the moment, so the performance improvement will need to come from the nut behind the handle bars.

Its looking doubtful that I'll be able to score the same rim. That leaves me 3 options;
1. Take it to the LBS and say "fix it". This is my usual solution, probably expensive for what you get, but convenient.
2. Find a rim with the same spoke count and use it.
3. New wheels. The best solution, when the $ are available.

Spoke breakage is of concern to me, I've broken a few over the years, so I should be weary of wheels with a reputation for spoke breakage.

When ever wheels are mentioned, some one invariably chimes in with "they are [censored] keep away from them". I'm sure shimano make many millions of wheels, so it would be reasonable to expect some riders would have reliability issues. Now whether it is the manufacturer, the rider due to weight, style, riding surfaces etc or a combination of these one can only speculate. It stands to reason that if a manufacturer has their wheels on lots & lots of bikes than it may appear that their wheels are [censored] when actually % wise they have no more problems than other makers.
BTW I'm < 80 kls, ridden 5.5k klms on my Sh 550s over all sorts of roads & no problems yet [touch wood🙂 ]

Edit: More cheap rims. I guess I'll have to be careful of spoke length if I go for a different rim.

Try a Trek dealer. Several of the Bontrager rear wheels use a 24h paired spoke rim and Bontrager replacement parts should be readily obtainable by Trek dealers.

What is the actual problem with the rim? Velocity may be able to repair it.

One of the spokes is starting to tear out. Some of the others are showing the inital cracking.

Give Velocity a call in Brisbane, they may be able to drill out the nipple holes and fit brass rivets. Alternatively they may fit a black Deep-V rim with the original hub and the same spoke pattern.

The Velocity Sparticus on my Tri Bike are similar.

Ok I shoulnt have probably said that, but the propriety spoke system is a concern. ~$10 a spoke no thanks, not when my favourite wheel repairer charges me $1 for DT swiss spokes.

The configuration is very similar to the Velocity Sparticus, do you have the 20 or 24 rear spoke configuration?

I went and counted the spokes, I have 24. The size of the spokes is on the rim. 288mm non drive side, 286mm drive side.

My preference is to replace rather than repair. I guess that if I don't find a suitable rim, I may as well get some new wheels. The Shimano R500 are $179 for the pair and are probably better wheels than the ones I have.

Got a response from the distributer, they want to sell me an entire wheel set.
