Hmmm...now while I don't doubt that Mr. Mitchell has produced some truly remarkable kneejerk tossery in the past, I'd be inclined to suggest that if someone has three separate incidents that nearly wrote them off in the space of five minutes then it actually probably *was* their fault. I cover 150-200km per week and I have someone startle me perhaps once every month or two. If you're being frightened every time you go out, there's really only one common element.

he's not exactly a block of flats, but a few years ago he was deemed too fat to participate in the celebrity grand prix! 🙂

I can't remember if this was for health reasons, or he just didn't fit in the harness properly

legally, but not defensively enough by being too close to the door
zone. The car occupants opening the door were still the ones

Yeah, I'm not really looking at the dooring so much...that's down to people not looking before opening the door. Sure, anyone riding on the road needs to position themselves appropriately, duty of care *does* go both ways but I was thinking more of general traffic scares. Some things will catch you out regardless of what you do, but three unrelated incidents in the space of five minutes speaks of either remarkably bad luck or poor roadcraft. I see people do really dumb stuff in front of me all the time, some of which even require me to take action, but it's not action of the scary emergency evasion type but rather a sit up, slow down and prepare to dodge the bits type action. If I wasn't paying attention to what's going on around me, some of these things could turn into a dangerous situation but in that scenario I'd be partially responsible for any injuries I incurred.

weren't excercising good roadcraft.

Like you, I ride, a -lot-, and rarely have near misses etc. Maybe a
scare every 6 months or so?

That was my first thought too. Could have been phrased better though.

Could depend a lot on the value of 'near miss tho' I guarentee that if
you ride down say Chapel st at 10 am you will have 3 people open thier
door on you. Becouse this is us and we have a clue we are unlikely to
be cought... (its still possible tho.... easy to think of circumstances
where you might make an 'oops' which is why it happens rarely cos we are
awake to the possibilities) But if all the evasion is ours then it
could be considered a near miss if you see what I mean. I would feel
required to yell "BOO" or something 🙂

Hmmm. If I had cut into the bike lane without looking today I would
have been collected by the fairly quick jag with 2 wheels up on the
footpath. Not a near miss cos I was looking. But you know, I did all
the dodging, I would call it an incident that could have written me off
you know

I've had nothing for six months, then three life-threateners in one trip
home.

Neil Mitchell is a top rating talkback radio host in Melbourne on radio
station 3AW. I used to listen to him a long while ago, agreeing with many
things he talked about. He is quite opinionated and hates teachers and, you
guessed it - cyclists. I've heard several of his rants against cyclists.
He's on a winner there - when would you listen to his show? While riding a
bicycle? Not on your life! Most of his listeners are drivers, so any rants
against cyclists are welcome. Neil has the gift of the gab, and takes
delight in out-talking anyone attempting to reason with him or ridicule him.
If he can't out talk them, then he uses the power of "the big red switch"
and cuts them off in mid stride. If he doesn't do that, then he ridicules
them after they have hung up, and by airing subsequent rants against the
unfortunate caller by other listeners. A long while ago I thought he was
good, but it took a couple of asinine topics to put me off him. For the past
couple of years I've been commuting on my bicycle and haven't listened to
radio at all.

Neil also writes every week for the Herald/Sun in Melbourne.
