  1. I'll be following the South Beach diet, and I'm doing it for blood
sugar control. If/when I lose weight, it'll be a happy bonus, but it
will not be my primary goal.

In addition, my doctor has agreed to match my medications to what I
eat, not the other way around (so long as I'm being careful about what
I eat). On Atkins, I was consuming about 15 carbs a day on average,
just to keep my BG where it should be. Something is wrong with that
    picture.

I have the large print South Beach cookbook, and Amazon.com just
shipped the diet book in large print. I have both books in regular
print, in new condition. I'll ship them off the the highest bidder
(my e-mail address is good). I'd just give them away, but our
finances are pretty tight right now. I'll make the decision on the
    2nd of January.

I didn't gain all of my weight back, but a lot of it crept back on
over the past 2-1/2 years. I've started losing without even actively
dieting yet, and my doctor is quite pleased with that

It's good to see so many familiar names!

I changed to South Beach shortly after being diagnosed with T2 diabetes..
In addition, I eliminated all potatoes, flour, rice, pasta, and added sugar.
The first two weeks were difficult, but they "worked" for me -- that is, I
lost my former cravings for carbs. I eliminated the "white stuff" (thereby
going beyond SB) for glucose control, just as you described. It has worked
exceptionally well for me. I have lost quite a bit of weight, feel better
and have more energy than for years, and I was able to eliminate all
medication in March of this year -- and have maintained very good glucose
control while doing so (average 96-98 FBG). I hope you are as pleased with
this diet as I am. SB is not a true low-carb diet (they refer to it as
"good carbs, not no carb"😉, but it's much lower-carb than many of us ate
    previously.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mary. When on Atkins, I learned a whole
new way to think about food. Now I've gotta start all over again with
the new plan. But I think it'll be worth it. Doesn't look like
there's very much posting about South Beach here. I was hoping to get
some suggestions and support. As I look through the posts that are
available to me, I'm a little discouraged. What has been your
    experience?

    experience?

    Carol

My experience has been very good. This is the first time I have been on a
diet where I never need to be hungry. With this one, I *eat* if I'm hungry
(no starvation), but I eat healthy food. I have lost almost 60 pounds, my
glucose is under control (right where my doctor wants it), I was able to
eliminate diabetes medication, and my triglycerides and cholesterol
plummeted. Also for the first time, I lost my cravings for carbs (including
sugary desserts). I have been more rigid than what most people say is
needed -- that is, I eat *no* rice, pasta, added, sugar, or potatoes; but I
also eat *no* sugar substitutes such as Splenda and Stevia. I recognize
that the sugar substitutes would not affect my glucose, but I do not want to
set off my "sweet tooth" again. That was always my downfall on every other
diet I ever tried. I was a true yo-yo dieter where I would lose weight, the
my cravings for sugar would set in, and I would regain the weight I had lost
(plus some more). So, I am better off just eliminating all those things,
not even being tempted by those who say "just a couple of bites" won't hurt
me. Many on this group are successful at eating almost anything but
limiting portions. I have done better by following the process I just
    described.

I'm not sure what information you need. However, I will certainly try to
respond if you will post any specific questions you have (and please feel
free to use my email ... the addy attached to this message is valid except
that you have to "take-out-the-litter" first).

I shopped today and got a bunch of meat (my sweetie got a rotisserie
for Christmas) and some lettuce, etc. for salads. Also, a huge bag of
broccoli. On Atkins, I ate large portions of broccoli at least once a
    day. It's pretty filling. :-)

Are there many other South Beachers in the group?

    Carol! Welcome back!

    Hey, skinny! How are you?

Hanging in there! I just mentioned in another post that I'm considering
declaring goal. I got down to 127, but panicked because I was getting
so saggy. I've been eating too many calories since I was forced to move
last September and am back up to 134, but noticed over the last couple
of days that my face, neck, and even arms have lost some of the
sagginess. I'm torn between being either "skinny" or looking like my
    great-grandma :-) Hmmmmmm ... It's hard (and kind of anti-climactic) to
give up on the goal that I set for myself 2.5 years ago, but it's really
just a number, isn't it? I'll see how I feel about it in another month.

It's GREAT to see you back here!

  17. Hi all,

After reading a bunch of asdlc posts, I've determined that the high
prevalence of Atkins dieters would make it very difficult for me.
MaryL, the one person who responded to my post, who is on SBD also
posts to my "other" newsgroup. So I think I'll limit my reading and
    posting to that group.

Thanks to everyone who dropped me a howdy. Much appreciated!

    Carol,

I don't think most folks here are Atkins dieters or stick to any single
plan so much as we are eclectic, individualized low carbers with a lot
    of experiences to share.

That said, SBD isn't really a LC diet, so there's something missing for
folks who want to discuss a particular plan with others who are on it.

Hope you have good luck with it.
