Well, a fifty year old baby I have been hankering after getting for a
while came up on Ebay, and I just had to bid (sorry Sir Bob)and won with
some fiendish bidding brinksmanship. So I am now the proud owner of a
Cyclemaster equipped Phillips bike.

The Cyclemaster is an internal combustion engine built into the rear hub
of a bicycle and manages, with 50year old engine technology, to get
200+mpg. Beats an electric bike hands down.

Next project is to engage someone in the engine business to explore what
a modern lightweight efficient engine technology applied to the design
could do in a modern frame.

Now all I've got to do is get up to Cumbria to collect it and practice
my Crazy Frog impressions ;-)

Hey that's cool - you can ride a bike and still burn fossil fuels too!

It's a moped as far as the law is concerned. But, of course, it's old
enough to get a VED disc for nothing. BTW, don't bank on getting 200mpg
from it; that was the manufacturer's claim from the days before the
Trades Descriptions Act, 150mpg will be nearer the mark.

I don't plan to ride it that far so mpg is a bit academic, I just like
the concept and curious to know more about it. Must join your NACC to
get the registration docs sorted etc

Top tip for fitting rear plate to mudguard: get an old-style
mudguard-fitting reflector and prise the reflector bit out. A long bolt

They did catch on, a bit. There were around half a million Cyclemasters
made. And you didn't need a helmet in those days. The real reason they
died out was that people's disposable incomes increased and they could

Indeed you must. It's our Coast to Coast ride this weekend - you could
stop off and do that on the way as you ride it home from Cumbria
<semi-colon, hyphen, right parenthesis>.

Just curious: where's the line drawn between motorized bicycle and "moped" -
if there is even one?

Don't even know if the term "moped" is used in the UK... when I was in
Germany in the 80's, I think the kids could drive mopeds starting around age
13 or 14.

Here in Canada, "moped" seems to mean a two-wheeled "bike" with an engine
under 50cc (you see a lot at 49cc 🙂 and you can drive them without a
licence. (insurance is ridiculous though - on par with a new car!) They all
seem to have pedals here too for getting around without fuel. (though having
tried one in this mode, you wouldn't want to... they're a bugger to pedal)

You got me thinking about using a chainsaw head as alternate power for a
bicycle.

Was thinking of getting a beat up old frame and a reconditioned chainsaw on
the cheap and testing the idea for kicks. I'm sure it's been done and there
are instructions online... haven't Googled seriously for it but this turned
up from a "motorized bike chainsaw" search:
