I recently changed jobs and decided to buy myself a bit of a prezzie with
some of the cash I got for unused leave......on Monday I had a new set of
Ayup lights delivered - see www.ayup.com.au and boy do they rock!!!
Basically the lights consist of 4 x 3W LEDs, with two on the bars and two on
the helmet. I was really keen to try them out so I got up at 0400h on
Tuesday morning and did a couple of hours on the Yarra Singletrack before
riding to work. The lights are excellent.....really good beam patterns with
no dull spots and they provide more than enough light for offroad use.
Without a doubt they provide better light than the 15W helmet light and 10W
bar light (both vistalights) that I had been using previously. I have also
had the chance to play around in the past with cateye tripleshots and the
blackburn LED units and I believe that the Ayup system has got it all over
them.
The build quality is really good and the actual light units are tiny (check
out the web site) - the battery packs are also amazingly small. The 3hr
Lithium Ion battery is about the size of a matchbox and weighs bugger
all.....I had it and the light mounted on my helmet and noticed it less
weight-wise than I usually do with just the vistalight mounted. The 6hr
battery mounts under the stem in a neoprene bag and is also pretty small and
the lights mount above the stem on the bars.
I bought the basic kit for $398 delivered that includes two light units, 2 x
3hr battery, 1 x 6hr battery, 1 x charger, helmet and bar mounts, 12V car
adaptor, and a neoprene tool roll to hold it all. Ayup offers a 1 year
unconditional warranty where they will replace any breakages to either the
light unit or the batteries (including if you damage them in a crash). The
guy who makes them is based in Brisbane and via email he tells me that he is
looking at a minimised version soon (aimed at roadies and commuters) that
would essentially be just the one light unit and he is also looking at some
CF components (take note weight weenies).
I ended up with the "bullet" style with an annodised red body and a gold end
cap.....they look really good and to top it all off they are waterproof to 5
metres!!! I am really happy with them and all the guys at work who ride
want a set too!! It is good to see a locally developed product that is so
good and I hope that the guy does really well out of them (I am pretty sure
he will).
