I have a Fuji Roubaix Pro (pretty much the same as the Roubaix, just a
double chain ring instead of a triple) and like it fine, but wouldn't
buy it as my only bike. They call it a road sport, but it rides more
like a entry-level serious racer. Other than using the 105 instead of
Ultegra or DA, and having a red frame, I don't see much difference
between it and the Professional (racing) set-up.

Take a look at the Specialized Allez Elite. Lists for about $1100 but can
be had for around $950. It has what was the S-Works frame of 2002, FSA
Gossamer crank with external bearings. It's Shimano 105, but some have been
coming through with Ultegra rear derr. The carbon seat post with zertz
insert is the same as on their $5000+ models.

Lafferty notes the Specialized. That's a pretty good bike but in my
experience they seem a little too light and so a little fragile. If
you're someone that's careful with their machinery then by all means
consider the Specialized as well.

You might also look into Raleigh since their Pro series are very nice
bikes as well.

Probably the most important thing would be the dealer. Setup and
adjustments are more important than the small differences in these
bikes.

Actually aluminum. All of the performance group is aluminum and all of
the competition group is (I think) mostly carbon. Have the catalog in
my desk drawer...

I was looking for a bike from $ 1,300 to $ 2,200 that was steel and
not sloping top tube and couldn't find any locally (very locally - I
know if I went into DC or Baltimore I would have found something).

And when I opened up the catalog just now, I saw that the Fuji
Professional was all carbon, so I guess it isn't exactly the same
frame as the Roubaix Pro. I'll pretend I was remembering the Team
Pro...

The Roubaix Pro is apparently aluminum from the literature, but mine
looks more like the traditional steel frame than most other bikes. If
you squint and ignore the carbon stuff.

Interestingly enough, I tried this model out yesterday at yet another
bike shop and it seemed to fit me the best out of all the bikes i've
tried so far. The sales guy - or should i say kid - seemed to talk more
sense than any of the other bike shop people i've come across so far
(i've been told i need a range of sizes, from 54-58cm). Apparently I
have a short torso and the trek just didn't fit properly (when looking
down at the stem, it was way behind the hub - apparently it's supposed
to be infront?)
Anyway i think i may go for this model - so thanks for all your advice.
