the bike, though - XT cranks and Middleburn rings. I bought those secondhand, with the intention of
removing the bigger ring for an SS project. I like Middleburn rings but think the cranks are
over-rated, personally.

It's parallel bike evolution. Bits which work and keep working stay on the bike; bits which don't
cut it are replaced as they break or wear out. Example: all my bikes have Flite saddles, ODI
lock-ons, Time pedals and (depending on weather) Crud Guards front & rear. As I said before - the
real surprise is that everyone else isn't running this setup too.
