After 2-3 years of hinting that I wanted a mandoline for Christmas, I
finally broke down and bought myself one. I found it at a Costco
Business Center for $60, and was pretty skeptical about its quality.
I did look it over pretty carefully, though, and it seemed well made.
The only plastic on it was on the handles and in the guard. (I saw
one nearly identical for $200 in an up-scale kitchen shop here in
Seattle, with far more plastic and not as many blades.)
The first night I couldn't think of anything better to make, so I did
potatoes au gratin. Just because I could, I used the crinkle cut
blade. I was having so much fun with it I ended up going through
nearly 5# of potatoes . . . we'll be eating those for a week.
Now I'm having lots of fun with salads and other things. My wife
thinks I'm nuts, but it's great. Sheesh . . . why did I wait so long?
