new tube install

  1. front tire tube let go the other day at the stem base.
    bought a couple Conti tubes to replace.
    I'd watched a Park Tool vid regarding changing the tube with Calvin.
    He referred to putting the tube and tire back in the same direction.
    Since I didn't mark anything during the removal, is there away to tell what direction the tire is going or isn't it really that important in the long run?
    Any reason to repair and save the old tube?

    And while I'm at it, the OEM is 42mm stem. Why would someone use the 60 or 80mm stem versions?

  3. I'd just throw out the tube . Depends on your budget. Just keep several new spares handy .

    The tire looks like it could run either direction. The longer stem are for deep dish wheels like zip or others sometime rims are 50 mm and much deeper. I bought too long of stem tubes for my citi bike by mistake. Long as you don't abuse the valve a little long should not be issue.

    Hmm tube looks to be too large a size , for a 23mm tire

  5. Speaking of tubes , I won't buy any more tubes that are not OEM.
    Found that I had flatted the front tire from yesterday AM's ride. Tried to top off the tire and air just hissed out.
    There was no puncture - it was the seem of the tube leaking about 14 inches from the valve stem. I'm thinking of OEM tubes only for now on .

  6. Tires like the ones I use have a tread pattern that pretty much shows how it rolls with the flow. Rolls with the grain, not against.

    Also sometimes actually have a small arrow imprinted on the sidewall along with the small print to show tire direction.

    Another thing, I always line up the tire label with the stem and stem Ole to help track punctures while making repairs. Knowing where the puncture on the tube is, matching to the tire during repair will help you find the thorn, glass, etc. So that you can remove it avoiding a second flat.

    Now that's confusing tread pattern. If I'm looking at the continuous groove (yet another chevron pattern in the tread) which might be better at channeling water away, rotation should be the opposite of your arrow.

    If you're saying the tube got punctured or ripped at the stem base then as Fourlegs said, throw it away.

    I would only repair and re-use tubes that got punctured anywhere but around the valve and the puncture is no bigger than the head of a pin. The vast majority of punctures will be "pin [censored]" anyway, easy to repair and allows the tube to be safely re-used.

  12. In all seriousness the leak was far away from the stem but on the seem of the tube. The stem is unrelated . There was not tube rotation ect.
