I have the windows version, I wasn't aware there were linux versions.

Is there a repository for a recent linux version anywhere? I'm running
kubuntu 5.04 on my other box, though I'm fumbling around a bit.

Nope - there is no linux version available at present. In fact, the email
stated that all versions have been windows-only so far. :-(

Well, it is compensation for not having to suffer the pain of constantly
keeping antivirus, antispam, antitrojan & firewall software up to date all
the time.

We also don't have to suffer the pain of paying Bill Gates lots
of money.

We can give copies of most of our software away to anyone - legally - in
fact, we are encouraged to do just that! Most distributions include
"minor" freebies like OpenOffice.org along with many, many MB of other
software, with many GB also available for "free".

We can have multiple users on a single machine, knowing that the "admin"
account really *is* safe from the users (which are also safe from each
other). The file permissions system is *way* ahead of anything M$ have
come up with.

Both KDE and Gnome desktops (yes, we can choose such things) are now as
good as, if not better than, the windows XP desktop in many ways. What's
more, they can be modified by the user to suit exactly what he/she wants.
Other users keep their own desktops.

Honest, Linux is dead easy to install too. Providing that you arn't trying
to use the latest models of peripherals that is! It just finds things &
loads any drivers automatically. No searching for driver disks during
installation. I admit that scanner and webcam support is particularly poor
and that Google Earth won't run though.

Yes but there's plenty of people happy with windows. Out of the box Kubuntu
gives a working computer with no need to instal extras and no need to learn
anything more than windows.

Having said that I don't feel particularly evangelical about it but would
appreciate any pointers you find to mapping software.

I'll post details of anything I find that looks promising. I was sure that
there was a version of GPS TrackMaker for Linux... Brain's going... X-)

GPSMan ( http://www.ncc.up.pt/gpsman/ ) looks a likely candidate, but I
can't get a background map to load at the moment.

Update: got a JPG map to load - I had to install the missing libtk-img
which is needed for "advanced" image files (like GIF and JPG) in Tcl/Tk.
Now I have to wait for the PC lead to arrive...
