If you're on a Mac, MacSOUP is your friend. If you're not, I've no idea.

I use Thunderbird which has a good filtering, but that's backed up with
NewsProxy which has a good old-fashioned kill-file that is a lot more
flexible. You should in fact be able to use NewsProxy with whichever
reader you're using now. More info at <http://www.fitnwell.net/nfilter.htm>

The main filtering set up right now is all these spams that are
cross-posted to loads of groups. If they're cross-posted to more than
four, they're blocked - Thunderbird doesn't even get to know of their
existence.

Whilst not wishing to tempt you away from the delights of a proper
newsreader (I use FreeAgent in conjunction with NewsProxy), google
groups can do kill files, after a fashion.

I use Outlook Express for email and Usenet and find that I can get rid of
certain posters using Message Rules.

Just get dialog, looks a lot like OE or thunderbird, but much more
powerfull.

With OE you can also Block Sender straight from the Message menu.
