Albert Park is a nice place to ride for 50 weeks of the year.
But you would have to wear a helmet. They are compulsory in Oz.

Isn't it a bit hot in that part of Oz to describe riding anywhere with a
helmet as "nice"?

It depends on how fast you ride. Also it's not been too hot in
Melbourne this weekend, especially Saturday :-)

It depends on how fast you ride. Also it's not been too hot in

I'd be interested to know what proportion of cyclists comply and how
much enforcement there is. Does it vary across states? Any idea how it
works in Perth WA?

I went to the Australian Grand Prix a few years ago and went cycling
afterwards round Melbourne. Very pleasant temperature it was too at
this time of year.

As URC's Perth correspondent I can give you my ideas of helmets over
here. As far as I'm aware the helmet laws are state laws not federal
(national) laws but I think all states and territories have a compulsory
cycle helmet law (I could be wrong on that part).

The compliance level is fairly high, maybe 80-90% or so with almost 100%
compliance amongst the 'serious cyclist' and considerably lower amongst
the 'person on a bike' type (nipping to the shops, kids mucking around
etc.).

Personally I think it's great to see so many cyclists around (you see a
lot more around than in the UK) whether they are wearing helmets or not,
but I do tend to think "good on them" when I see one not wearing a
helmet. Not because I'm a great advocate of civil disobedience but
because I feel the compulsory helmet law is ridiculous and if compliance
fell to a level where it was no longer worth enforcing then that would be
a good thing (oops, better stop before I go totally off on a rant).

Oh, and yes, it is bloody hot wearing a helmet - particularly going up
hill in a forest sheltered from any cooling breeze! 🙁
