nipple soreness

If it's just due to friction, tape helps. Some people get Rayneaud's phenomenon (white/blue + painful extremeties with minor temperature changes), in which case there are medicines that help (nifedipine etc) but you'd need to see your doctor for those.

I use a little bit of A&D ointment for longer rides and it solves the
problem for me. Find it on the baby products isle of the drugstore.

one word...Purelan!

I bought three tubes of this stuff while working outside 2 winters ago.
used it on my lips, hands and nose. Its really good stuff. cheaper than
*anyhting* on the market for the quantity of Lanolin (100%)

Gets fairly thick in the cold, so keep it/put it on indoors.

Switch from aluminium alloy nipples to brass nipples - the consensus
opinion is that brass nipples are more durable and less easily damaged. 😉

Two band-aids as anti-friction shields should do the trick. There are
other solutions, but that one is the easiest to implement.

Years ago my brother was a marine mechanic (he worked on boats, he
wasn't in the military). He was repairing a fuel (?)tank fitting of
some sort, and walked into a marine supply store asking "Do you have any
stainless steel nipples?" The salesman replied, "The only person with
stainless steel nipples is Superman's girlfriend."

Other than that, I'd vote bandaids too.

Runners deal with this all the time in all weather and the best stuff is
Bodyglide (http://www.sternoff.com/). Isn't greasy and doesn't stain like
Vaseline and way less hassle than Band-Aids.

(BTW, my SO, when told of the thread, had two suggestions; the first

3/4" round band aids. They work great.

Off-Road motorcycle riders have been using duct tape for years, for this
purpose.
