Dear Hank,

I was tempted to add that, but some velocipedes had brakes, while
others didn't.

When you see something that looks like a ridiculous miniature rear
fender on a velocipede, it's usually the remains of a brake whose
brake cord rotted away long ago.

I've waited in fear and trembling.

But so far Frank Krygowski hasn't pointed out that even a lantern
burning the finest whale-oil might not have made much difference at
the estimated 4 mph speed of the fatal encounter.

Of course, Frank's quicker on the uptake than some of us.

This helmet, if properly secured to the breast-place by the customary
charnel-bolt, might have allowed the unfortunate velocepedist's neck
to survive his encounter with the wagon-wheel:

assurance a few days ago from a Colorado coroner:

Telluride Ski Resort on Wednesday.

Brian Irvin of Mesa, Ariz., was racing a friend down the intermediate
Marmot run when he lost his balance and sailed out of a stand of trees
about noon, according to San Miguel County authorities.

Irvin was not wearing a helmet and died on the mountain from his head
injuries, coroner Bob Dempsey said.

"If he had been wearing a helmet, he would be alive today," Dempsey
said Wednesday evening.

It depends on how fast you consider "sailing".

KILLINGTON -- A skier has died after crashing into a tree at Killington
Ski Resort.

Police say Kirk W. O'Brien, 44, of Cumberland, R.I., caught an edge of
his ski in the snow, lost control and struck a tree off the
Bittersweet trail Sunday at 10 a.m.

O'Brien, who was wearing a helmet, suffered massive head trauma.
Police say he was lifeless when emergency personnel arrived and was
pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

Family and friends say O'Brien was an expert skier who started skiing
at age 9 and had skied around the world.
