Well I left work early to go and pick my car up from the garage and I thought I would cycle all the way there instead of cycling to the nearest station (6 miles) and getting the train (the garage is right near Horsham station) as it was such a nice day. Big mistake. I'd got about 5 miles before I heard the dreaded hiss of escaping air and discovered a rear flat. It turned out that a patch I had appliede on an earlier puncture had come loose so I stuck another one on and continued. Three miles later it went flat again and again the patch had become unstuck (these were the glueless patches). Unfortunatly every time I tried to apply a new patch the tyre would just deflate again so I ended up running out of patches and had to walk the last four miles to the LBS for a new puncture repair kit. Just made it before it closed. Needless to say I didn't get back in time to pick my car up so I will have to collect it tomorrow morning.
Lessons learnt:
1. Don't rely on glueless patches. 2. Learn how to get the back wheel off so I can just put a new tube in next time.
Think I will take the other bike tomorrow assuming my legs have recovered.

Point 5, my only puncture this year was when I was not carrying a repair kit, spare tube or pump on the way to work. It was the first time I had not carried it these for well over a year, as I had left them at work after being given a lift home the previous shift.

I just slap them on the *deflated* tube. No preparation other than making sure its dry, bung it in the tyre and pump it up (up to 100psi). Never had a problem and my belief is the pressure between the tube and tyre pushes the patch onto the tyre, not off.

I just slap them on the *deflated* tube. No preparation other than making sure its dry, bung it in the tyre and pump it up (up to 100psi). Never had a problem and my belief is the pressure between the tube and tyre pushes the patch onto the tyre, not off.
That's the thing, cleanliness. And making sure any remnants of older patches (as the OP suggested) are removed first ... 😉
