Giro Atmos is a good (looking) helmet. The only thing is the wind noise.
I can't get the straps adjusted so that they ly flat against my head.
Lot of air turbulence around my ear = lot of noise. Annoying.

How much are you wanting to spend, and what Bell helmet is it that's not
cool, just for a baseline of 'uncoolness'?

I've got over a thousand Google hits for helmets; do you have any other
parameters since my experience is the higher priced helmets, especially
those with internal reinforcement/cage, have plenty of cooling.

Would you be wearing a bandanna under the helmet, for example?

look for one for which the manufacturer claims it actually protects
against headinjury

Helments are a little like saddles - a very personal fit. I suggest
you go to one of those big bike shops and try on the Specialized,
Trek, Bell, Giro ... helments. See what feels right and how you like
the adjustment method used in each one. . Remember to get a size large
enough to fit you head plus any bicycle cap, sweatbands or ear warmers
you may want to wear.

If Bell fits you well then I'd say check them out first. I have the same
mid-level ($60) model that Mark Hickey had on when he had that terrible
crash, and it's still my favorite lid (for looks, comfort and fit).

I bought a Cratoni (?) on sale for more money than the Bell, and it's...OK.
(The Bell looks and fits a lot better IMO.)

Really, the helmet shapes are pretty different.
I used to have Giros for just that reason, but now I have a Selev
Matrix, after a Selev Alien. The Alien is extremely light (215g,
advertised, I recall), and the Matrix is a touch heavier. But it's
cool ! Ventilation is super, and actually cold in spring and autumn. I
do find that the front vent moves sweat very effectively away from the eyes.

The reason I retired the Alien was the front of the shell, which has a
little peak effect. For relaxed riding, not neck twisting, the Matrix is
a good "sight" better. It also comes in both boring and regular colors,
mine being blue-white-red, but the French versions.

BTW, what are the colors of the Republic ?

I like my Bell Furio.

Fits well, medium price, and Bell sent me new pads when the old ones got
stinky and were separating. Just took one e-mail with my mailing address.

I like my LAS Kripton. The one-size-fits-all seems to be true. The
straps lie flat, the brow isn't visible, and it stays in place. Comes
in lots of color options too.

So no Carrera hairnet for you?

That's my deal. Minus the (serious) accident, plus her years of RN
experience on the "neural floor", plus pedi/adult ICU time (one year
each) at a regional trauma hospital, plus clinical observation for CRNA
degree at Ben Taub, Houston...

I have an older MTB helmet by them. Trim, fits great (sizes seem to run
small with Limar). Out of the way for sunglasses, higher off the ears,
unlike the "club issue" Bell Ghisallo, which is a noticeable chunk
cooler in hot weather but is somewhat bulbous and tends to push on
sunglasses, esp. on the forehead. The Limar 909? --D-y

When you find one you like, buy two so you can always have a clean,
dry one to wear.

Dear Peter,

As far as I know, all helmets stand off your head with a plastic inner
harness and foam pads.

Ventilation is going to be pretty much the same, since the models with
more holes mostly slap a rib across a large hole and turn it into two
smaller holes.

One trick for keeping cool in arid Colorado is a skull cap:

I like that model because it has an elastic band and fake tail, so it
needs no tying and doesn't come undone.

You sweat into the skullcap, and the evaporation keeps a wet, cool
cloth on your head.

The band keeps most of the sweat out of your eyes.

The fake tail helps wick the sweat to the back and shades the back of
your neck a bit.

If you think that bicycle helmets are big and hot, pity the poor
off-road motorcyclist trapped in one of these things on a slow,
difficult summer trail:

Bell Sweep R,
MET Stradivarius 2
Specialized Decibel
Uvex FP1.

They all pass the crach-tests, the view test, and the stay-on-the-
head-test.

Their cooling factor in hot or cold weather are not significantly
different.

The Specialized Decibel is the only one with a negative remark about
safety: The protection on the backhead does not go deep enough, Tour

There is one negative comment about the Giro helmet:

For my part I feel confirmed that Met Stradivarius 2 was a good choice and
I will probably buy that one again next year, when it has passed its five
years of service on my acid-fuming head.
