Hello fellow WW's,
I don't exercise right now. I do work at a dr's office and
I am on my feet always walking for my shift (5 hours). Is
this good enough or should I actually "excercise"?

For heart health, and overall fitness, you should try to
include something more vigorous than walking around an
office on a regular basis (the goal being to elevate your
heart rate for 30 minutes or so).
For weight loss, walking around the office certainly can't
hurt, but it's hard to say how much it helps. Perhaps you
could wear a pedometer for several shifts, to get an idea
how much walking you're actually doing. Given that gentle
walking burns around 80-100 calories per mile, you would
have to walk around 3 miles per shift to burn off a single
Snickers bar.

Well, it is excercise, but if it's what you've always done,
then continuing doing it isn't going to make things change.
Doing something new will up your normal activity level and
earn you activity points.

Well, you can lose weight without exercising ... if that's
what you are wondering about. Weightloss in a nutshell is
less calories taken in than what the body puts out. I was a
stubborn cuss, didn't do much exercising at all until after
I had reached my goal. BUT ... weightloss can be faster with
exercise, and it most definitely is in your best interest
healthwise. It can aid in toning your body faster and will
help you retain lean muscle that will more than likely be
lost with the weight if you don't exercise. And you want as
much of that lean muscle as possible, as it keeps your
metabolism going.
Is your current regime of working in the doctors office
*good enough*? Well, think of it this way. Is it a new job,
or have you been doing it for quite some time? If you've
been doing this job for a bit, and have found yourself at ww
... then I think you probably know the answer yourself. <g>
Most of us define *exercise* ... as far as earning those
extra activity points ... as activities that are outside the
normal daily routine. If you are looking for a way to earn
extra activity points or to better your cardio health,
muscular health, raise energy levels, or plain ol' mental
health ... then I would say you should also be looking into
adding some more formal exercise to your routine. This can
be something as simple as a long walk in the evening.
Just my view on things.

Exercise is mostly targetted at health rather than weight
loss, though it does help with weight loss too. The usual
advice is to 'exercise' 30 minutes three times a week, and
exercise in this context means that you will increase the
heart rate considerably. During the exercise you should be
breathing hard and it should be starting to get difficult to
talk. My rule of thumb is that you should be sweating and
out of breath. Walking round an office/supermarket etc
wouldn't get the heart rate up enough in my book.

Actual exercise - even walking - is better: all you do at
work is shift about, a few steps in each direction. When you
go for a walk, you keep moving continuously, and if you walk
briskly, you will raise your heart and breathing rates,
which is what you need to do. I seem to gallop about the
house all day, up and down the stairs continuously, when
working on some projects (I'm a dressmaker: sewing room is
upstairs, cutting space is in the dining room!), but I don't
count it as exercise. I do count my mile walk to collect my
son from school every day: a mile there and a mile back for
2.5 exercise points per day.

I do little to no formal exercise. I must eat all my daily points to lose
and I only count things like extra shopping as activity points. I never
count regular house work but I do count when I scrub a carpet as I do that
on hands and knees. I would lose faster if I did exercise but so far
haven't found anything I can commit to for a life time so feel for me this
is a better choice. Lee

Exercising to me is mental, after I go for a run or work
out hard for an hour, I feel tired, but in a good way.
After I exercise, I am less likely to overeat, and very
thirsty, so I get a lot of water in that way. Exercise also
tones your muscles, although I still have about 20 pounds
to lose, my legs look so much better than before I started
WW...It also raises your metabolism slightly and is good
for your heart. You should try to do some "formal"
exercise, how about a 30 minute walk during your lunch
break, or before or after work?
