Given the increased number of pedal cyclists on our roads, and given the current fashion of allowing them to share pavement space with pedestrians, is it time that, in the interests of crime detection, and to maximise the return on our massive investment in town centre CCTV cameras, compulsory number plates were required to be fitted to them all?
AIUI, many/most U.S. states require bicycles to display a "licence plate".

I don't think so, although I did used to visit uk.transport and uk.rec.driving occasionally.

Nasty sharp things like number plates could do a lot of damage to the innocent people into whom we are always riding, and, even more importantly, we could scratch cars' beautiful bodies, when we viciously ram them. Would this be progress, after all?

I can't honestly think where they would be fitted on an average bike, let alone a racing bike (stripped down to sub-20lb with no unaerodynamic protrusions - you need this when you only have 1/3 bhp to play with) and the police don't even bother nicking people with no lights, so they're not going to be bothered looking for plates.
Anyway, the (prolific) bike mugger in Swindon got caught and sent down last month. Unlike drivers behind glass, people tend to see the person on a bike and remember them better.

In certain US states _all_ pedal cycles have to display plates.

IMHO all road users need to be treated equally. This would imply, amongst other things, _either_ removing the necessity for motor vehicles to display plates, _or_ requiring pedal cyclists (and pedestrians) to display them. I wondered what points I could elicit to further the argument one way or the other.

Well, I suppose you could fit one facing sideways in the same way that competitor numbers are on racing bikes? Which is not to say that the idea (of number plates on bikes) has any validity ...
.... not to mention, given that lowlifes are stealing the number plates of people's cars in order to divert police attention, I'm sure they'd have no problems with stealing them off of bikes to ...
