  1. After being a diabetic for 25+ years (currently
    diet/exercise controlled) and a recent open-heart surgery
patient, I have been following my diet VERY strictly. My
question is this: All the recommendations I see are for less
than 30% of calories from fat, a minimum is never mentioned.
I know you do required some fat though. I have been running
low to mid teens fat percentage with some days in single
digits. Is this okay? Where do we draw the line? Any input
    would be greatly appreciated.

Fitday.com helps you track all those stats really well. It
will tell you what percent of your calories are from fats,
carbs, and protein as well as break down your fat calories
into saturated, polysaturated, and monosaturated fats. I
read that saturated fat should be less than 15 grams on a
2000 kcal diet and total fat between 30 and 40 grams. I
don't have diabetes or heart disease, so that may not be
    appropriate for you.

I do know that too little fat may cause problems with your
gall bladder which are not pleasant.

Are you overweight? If your BMI is more than 20, your
weight may not be ideal especially for someone with type
II diabetes. Has anyone informed you about metabolic
    syndrome (MetS)?

I would be concerned that either carbohydrates or proteins
    or both are excessive.

I prefer a balance where there is reductions across the
board so that relative proportions are maintained.

Permanent weight loss is the only known way to "cure" MetS.

Trying to look at a person's dietary regimen with
reference to only one macronutrient is likely to be bad
    guesswork at best.

What are the dietary guidelines you're observing now? What's
the general state of your health? Are you overweight and if
so, by how much (using whatever standard you use)? How many
calories do you consume in a normal day and, if you know,
proportionately, from what kinds of sources? How active are
you, with what sorts of activities?

What would you consider an ideal breakdown of your dietary
components? Do you consume alcohol and if so, in what
    amounts, how often?

Bob, the combination of factors that you list make it
hazardous to look at your dietary regime and make
    suggestions.

My only suggestion is to sit with a professional and do a
rather thorough look at all the conditions facing you with
an eye to generating a tailored program for you.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't try to get fat calories down
to single-digit amounts. It generally means skewing the rest
of the macronutrient intake too high.

Again, I suggest doing a complete workup with a pro who will
be able to factor in all the situations and conditions you
have. You have a balancing act to perform and the sort of
information you'll get here will, of necessity, be
    incomplete.

  13. Yo Bob:

Here's the deal - having a toe removed, bypass surgery+ and
healing slowly are not relatively minor. Sorry.

What do you mean you do a hundred miles of cycling at
a time? That seems very high. What other exercise are
    you doing?

Are you tracking your food intake at Fitday.com? It is
    very helpful.

My personal opinion is that the diabetic guidance to food
intake is designed for the masses. If you are truly
interested in living longer, you can make great
    improvements on it.

Low carbs are great. What else are you eating?
