now you wouldn't have happened to have been circling just outside St Patrick's Cathedral tonight at 5.30 before his path was crossed by a goatied guy on a hardtail with TT bars?? If so, then woohoo - i've just identified my first aus.bicycle person on the road! If not, then there's somebody else out there on a glorious blue fixie and a reasonably smooth looking cadence as he hurtled down the road 🙂

Hah. i was gonna say gday but was mesmerised by the wierd shifters/levers arrangement you had setup. Looked a bit like an mtb yearning to be STI with all them cables flying about 😄 😄 😄 wee they bullhorn bars or something else turned up?

as for the cadence, its certainly improved from the first week of 'captain bounce' but smooth it aint. I hit patches where it all comes together but then try and figure out what good habit it is i have fallen into, and it all goes out the window again!!!

Think im gonna do that route more often as Vic Ave is just too hairy on the fixed. I knows you now so will wave next time (if i aint goin down hill...) :-)

Ah - I should've understood the trance-like look on your face as being "What the hell is he riding?!??!?" And yes, you've interpreted it rightly. MTB with profile bullhorns and levers/shifters whacked on the ends which do a pretty good STI impersonation actually! I've been very pleased with how it works... Cheaper than STI, and besides, waste not want not, and so on... There are too many cables flying around at the moment, you're right - That'll be improved when the front derailleur/shifter comes off. At least I'm easily recognisable - I don't think I've seen many other MTBs with bullhorns!

the blue is growing on me (so to speak). My first reaction when i picked it up was "But it's blue!".entertained thoughts of getting it resprayed (this wil lbe inevitable as there a few patches of bubbling/rust spots developed in palces) but what colour? I lerv my mint green roady (mainly cos nobody else rides it) but the blue suits the utilitarian commuting use.

which way do you ride? you live near me. maybe you know some secret routes...

i always thought of chroming a bike would be awesome, if a bit 'dragsterish'...

my route? coming home it's past the cathedral and down the hill, across hoddle and into highett, burnley and bridge rd (mind the car doors!) across the river and up through kew junction all the way to harp - then the bike path to burke rd, gordon st, across balwyn rd and then backstreets to my place down on belmore rd near elgar... I know I could avoid the hills if i wanted, but i chalk it up as 'training' and endure it 🙂

hmmm. Im a bit more direct. currently go along Vic St, over river and left up church to Kew Junction and on to Harp as per you.
Then just keep following the tram lines and i live a few blocks past that
(2nd highest point in metro area apparently 🙄 ).

Its that VicSt/BarkersRd gorge that makes it all so hard
(dont bother suggesting crossing the BurnleyBridge to Boulevard, etc. On a fixed that hill just aint likely). maybe i could turn east(right) on the north side of the bridge and go thru the backstreets to Kjunction?
I do seem to remember there is still one stonker of a hill one black east of the bridge tho near them groovy architectural houses...

I hit Doncaster Rd. last night.. from Burke Rd. eastwards. Man that
road is fun compared to ol' faithful (Maroondah). The hills are bigger
down (faster) but don't seem as painful up. It might have just been
my mood/energy level?

Any shops with angle parking seems to be shocking for that - town planning disaster which is all over Melbourne - I consciously scoot around the Union/Belmore intersection shops for that exact reason!

I'm just hoping that this Boroondara cycling money might result in a crossing across Balwyn Rd between Belmore and Whitehorse... that place is hideous to get across in the evenings...

No, all that money is PBN, so onroad lanes. There have been council/vicroads mutterings about putting lights at Gordon/Whitehorse which could be your answer. Write to ProgressPress and Vicroads (in that order).
There will be lanes put in the length of Mont Albert Rd, Greythorn Rds and Union (East Balwyn Roundabout to nearish MontalbertRd i think).
Maybe turn left at Gordon/Whorse and go along Balwyn till you get to Winmallee? Taht way you can keep moving whilst waiting for an opportunity to cross...

Well done - you described exactly what I do at Balwyn Rd!! On a bad night you can still end up stranded on the wrong side for a fair few minutes however... Not always an unappreciated 'rest'! Letter sounds like a plan - Shall get drafting (the writing type!)...

this works quite well. the lights all going my way certainly made it better too 😄
Much gentler climb and non-existant fumes/cars too all the way between Gipps St bridge and Church St/stephensonSt corner!
I thoroughly recommend it
