TrailRat (') said:How do you convert a standard 26" wheel so that it can be fitted on
one side. What I mean by that is, if I buy an off the shelf cheap
wheel with axles that can be fitted to a fork, how do i go about
converting it so that I fit it on a trailer. I think they call it
cantilevering ???? Is it possible to do without dissambling the wheel?
I don't mind disassmbling the hub but the wheel is another story.
Conventional bike hubs are not designed to be supported on one side only
and the axles aren't very thick, so may bend. Downhill mountain bikes
use thicker front axles, these might be a thing to look at (but
possibly quite expensive). Equally, the Cannondale Lefty hub is
specifically designed to be supported on one side only and has a very
fancy stub axle - but that _would_ get expensive.
Best solution would be to talk to tricycle people - the front hubs used
on tadpole trikes would do what you want. Mind you, they're probably
expensive too.
