In a couple of weeks the lake will be warm enough to go swimming.
Way back when I had said that i would try something....
I want to do some practicing. When I swim in the lake, how can i ensure that boats, PWCs and even canoes dont hit me?
If you do open water swimming, what do you do?

Canoes aren't a problem - they don't move that fast. Wear a bright colored cap. But for the others, the only real protection is either picking the spot, or having an escort.

That might work...
I dont wear trunks though.... they would cause a rash after a k or 2, or more.
Any suggested colour?

Canoes around here are sometimes powered by engines....
I will be close to shore, but far enough that boats may come close.

A number of our local triathletes also use bloody bright orange caps. Much of the time, though, picking the right lake seems more important.
Would just ur standard latex/lycra/silicone swim cap work?? red, or orange ... what else?

Fortunately you can hear them from a long distance away. You may just have to look up frequently then. Ideally you'd have a kayak escort or a buddy swimmer.
Using a tri wetsuit would also give you a safety margin - you can't sink wearing one should you get hit or cramp up in deep water (happened to me on Saturday in the kelp - nasty calf spasm lasted 45 seconds)

Actually I could use a balloon to hold my hips up on the last 50m of a 200 Fly... :-)

One idea: swim early in the day. Therefore, hopefully the boaters will not be completely drunk yet.
