  1. I need some cushioning on top of my othotics. I used to buy sorbothane
inserts that worked great. They were about 1/8 inch thick throughout.
Now the stores I go to only have inserts with a built up heel that I
can't wear on top of orthotics. Any ideas?

Don't do it. My understanding of orthotics is that putting a cushiony
cover compromises their ability to control foot motion. Or, just take the
orthotics to a shoe store or podiatrist and have them recovered with
    something more appropriate.

My advice is this: if you've got a system that's working for you with
certain brands/models of inserts, insoles, etc., DON'T MESS WITH
    SUCCESS.

I've found that most of my local stores have phased out carrying
established/reputable brands of insoles like Spenco and Sorbothane.
Instead, I now see a lot of lower-quality insoles like the "Sof" brand.
I get the feeling these guys know a lot about marketing, but next to
    nothing about running.

The good news is that Spenco and Sorbothane are still making a full
line of products, and if you know what you want, you can just mail
order it from dozens of places. (brick & mortar running stores are also
    a good place to look)

  4. Dave's reply is the accepted wisdom. However, I have been through three
marathons, hundreds of 10K's and plenty of 60 mile weeks using thin
inserts on top of my orthotics. Works for me. The inserts are thin
enough to mold themselves to the shape of the orthotics.

  5. I have tried several on-line stores and brick and mortor running stores
without success. Googling on sorbothane hasn't helped. I'll try Spenco.
If anyone finds what I am looking for, please let me know.

Try Yahoo shopping for searches when you are looking to buy something.
    A quick check turns up:

    And many, many more.

Thanks but I had tried all three. No luck. I also tried Spenco direct
but it isn't listed on their web page. I did leave a message with their
customer support. That seems to be my last holpe.

I usually find Spenco and similar brands with plain flat pad insoles in
grocery and drug stores, not in running stores. It may depend on your
    whereabouts, though.

I know what you need. I have these insoles called shockblockers. They
don't have a built in arch and they are superflexible, so they
perfectly will fit over you orthotics. Additionally, shockblockers are
super shock absorbing and cushy. They are the most comfortable insoles
I tried up to now. My husband wear them over his custom orhtotics when
    running. I think shockblockers come in 2 thiknesses: 3/16" and 5/16". I
wear the thicker ones (shockblockers medical). Just check their website
and you'll find all the information:
