Never did like Bovril. Marmite is okay, but the Antipodean Vegemite is by far
the best. Less salty & less slimy than Marmite.

I was speaking to a Kiwi colleague about Vegemite yesterday,
apparently the myth that it is their staple diet is about as truthful
as the one that they drink XXXX ;-) it is chepaer than Marmite in
Sainsbury's but it may be a cobber copy.

An Oxo cube crumbled in a mug of hot water is much much nicer.(imho)

agreed but I can't eat Oxo, being a veggie, one of the few pleasures (along
with pork scraychings) I have had to give up. Could always try a veggie
stock cube ;-p

Indeed, although there is a limit to how imaginative one can be with a
turnip, Quorn and even Morningstar streaky strips are regulars in my house
(BTW they all have identical markings on each rasher)

There's veggie Oxo in the green boxes. No meat content but much salt,
starch and 'additives'.

Yes I have seen a few frozen ready meals in hypermarkets. BTW I always
boycott my local Sainsbury's at Christmas because they get rid of the
chilled veggie food counter and fill it with even more meat

(In light of the lack of French vegetarian dining opportunities) I'd

The Plat du jour was a plate of steamed vegetables and rice. Every other
dish was a gratin dish with some ham in. They didn't see the problem.
Ham isn't *meat*. The Pakistani, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, North
African and Italian restaurants in Paris were a much safer bet.

Things have improved hugely for vegis in France within the last 5 years
or so IME. There's no usually at least one veggie thing on the menu
that doesn't have chicken or ham on in most resturants, in the cities
at least.

Spain still has the "if it's not red meat, it's veggie" thing down
pat though.

Though I think that depends where you go. I had no problem spending a
week in Barcelona. There were several veggie restaurants and plenty of
tapas bars with enough choice for veggies.

I guess other areas are less easy.
